Staff Sgt. Robert J. Wilson

Robert Wilson Obituary

Staff Sgt. Robert J. Wilson wasn't new to Iraq, and he knew well the dangers. He wrote to a neighbor this month that he loved what he was doing all the same.

Wilson, 28, from suburban Boynton Beach, died Saturday of wounds from an explosive device that detonated while he was on foot patrol in Baghdad.

His mother and stepfather, who live in the Chalet subdivision, turned away requests for interviews Monday.

"They were very proud of him," said a neighbor who wrote to him recently and a week ago received a letter back, in which he described the satisfaction of serving.

A member of the 101st Airborne Division, Wilson entered the Army three months after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. He arrived at Fort Campbell, Ky., in September 2006. He served more than one tour in Iraq, the neighbor said.

Of 22,000 soldiers from his division, about half are in Iraq, base spokeswoman Lt. Col. Rumi Nielson-Green said. Ten soldiers from the base have died this month.

"Everyone who lived with him, trained with him, ate with him, is there now," she said.

Wilson received a number of awards, including a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

In addition to his mother, Peggy Habian, and stepfather, Kevin Habian, he is survived by his father, Willie Wilson of Taylorville, Ill.

Elsewhere in Iraq, Sunni Arab guerrillas ambushed an American convoy in the northern city of Mosul with a roadside bomb Monday and sprayed survivors with machine-gun fire from perches in a nearby mosque, killing five U.S. soldiers.

It was the second devastating attack on U.S. forces this month, bringing the number of fatalities to 36 this year.

Although American fatalities have fallen sharply in Baghdad and Anbar province, they have not slowed in the north. Three-fifths of the American servicemen killed this year were in three Sunni Arab-dominated provinces north of Baghdad.

Although we never met in person, you are part of my Brandon's Comrades in Florida and I'm sure the two of you would have been close. As a mom, I continue to miss my Brandon as I am sure your mom and family continue to miss you too. I am always grateful to connect with people who were so close or connected with my Brandon. It somehow makes me feel closer to him. For that I am grateful. Thank you.

It's been almost 4 years and I still can't believe it. You were my best friend in Colorado and always there for me. I have lost so many friends over the years, but it still doesn't sink in that your gone. All the great days and long nights. We had so many good times together. It's tough when we lose a brother. I served with SSG Wilson in I 3/3 ACR. He was more than a friend I will always consider him my brother. I still have the letter he wrote to me before he left Fort Carson when he thanked me for being there for him during our deployment. The impact of the letter was felt the day he gave it to me and it is still felt today. I will never forget you bro and I know one day we will meet again in the city of angels.

Dear Mrs. Wilson, I just received your e-mail today. I am so sorry that it took me this long to write back to you. I haven't been on my computer in a while. My mom died and I have been grieving myself half to death. She was my best friend!Thank you for writing to me we loved Rob and we know that you miss him terribly. We also know how proud of him you are. You have so much to be proud of. He was a wonderful person, soldier, friend to all and as you said, son. What I am getting the most comfort from is that I Know that one day I will see my mom again and that is keeping me going. I was with her when she took her last breath and have know doubt where she is right now. Please take care and may God bless you everyday!

As his patrol was leaving that evening I asked him where they were going, then gave him 40 bucks and asked him to get as much dip as he could possibly get for that much. He asked me if I was out and I told him yea so he gave me the last can of dip he had, it was un-opened. I still have that can of un-opened copenhagen...

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Robert, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Bobby,
I miss all the good times we had at Carson. I remember having to babysit you the day you had your wisdom teeth cut out. You slept all day and I just sat there bored out of my mind because you didn't have a tv or radio in your room. Then there was the day when you finally showed up at the motor pool running to the tracks because you missed pt and formation. We were all laughing wondering why you were running because you were already 5 hours late so what was an extra 2 minutes going to gain you. It sure wasn't going to keep SFC Padilla from smokin' ya. Despite all your antics that first year, you were the hardest worker in the mortar section. I was really bummed when you were transferred to Ironhawk before our first tour. I am glad I got to see you and take this picture of us before I left to come home. It was an honor to have met and serve with you. I miss you my brother mortar. MJ

I meet Rob in 2003 in a small Texas town. He was station in Colorado Springs at the time and told me he was about to ship out to Iraq. He had such a great smile, such a nice guy. He really loved his country. I have some photos from that night and always wondered what happened to him. I'm sorry to hear about this. They say the GOOD always die young. I feel honored to have meet him if only for a brief time.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, My husband SSG Turner returned from Iraq on November 21st on the 6am flight. I heard that ya'll were going to be there and I missed out meeting you two. I was truly sad about that. SSG Wilson was one of the soldiers that I did know and I got to talk to him for awhile the day that they left for Iraq. He was such an awesome guy and even though I was sad that day he had me laughing so hard that he even had my mind off of what was going on for awhile. He was such a good person and when I got word that he had died I was so upset that I couldn't quit crying the entire day and would break into tears often. Finally I did the only thing that I could do in his memory and went and had dog tags made with his name, Rank, company, battalion, and brigade on them and at the bottom I put Never Forgotten. I wear them in his memory. I wanted to meet you to tell you how much he touched my life and how sad I am that he gave the ultimate sacrifice. He is a true hero and missed so very much! I am so truly sorry for your loss because you raised a precious, wonderful son and I know it has to be hard. Please know though that so many others are thinking of you and you are very near to our hearts and always in our prayers. SSG Wilson will live forever in our hearts, thoughts and memories. He will forever be loved and NEVER, EVER, FORGOTTEN! May God bless you during this season and keep you in his care. Also, I hope that it will comfort you to know that you are not alone. You have so many of us who care and hold you dear to our hearts. I truly regret not getting to meet ya'll on the 21st. I was really wanting too. With love,

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My name is Hope Veverka and I am the mother of Fallen Hero, PFC Brandon Robert Sapp, KIA 8/14/04. I, like yourself, became a Gold Star Mother and a Heart-Broken Mother in a blink of an eye. I know your pain and feel the sadness you must feel now. I am so sorry for your loss. Words come to mind, but time, prayer and friends are the only things that give space between the tears and finally holding your head up again. Before departing WPB, I created a Memorial Stone to honor PBC's Fallen in the Global War on Terrorism. My only hope is that you will give your blessing to adding your son's name to the Memorial Stone. Feel free to write me, whenever you are ready, and we will talk more. As for Robert's prayer from me, I am reminded of those words: 'Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant, Robert'. To his family, know that you are not alone. God knows your pain.
Respectfully and sincerely,
Hope Veverka

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

I am so truly sorry for the loss of SSG Wilson. My husband was in his company and the day that they left for Iraq I got to know SSG Wilson really well. We talked for over 45 mins. He was so much fun to talk to and was so funny. I liked him instantly. I was so shocked when I found out what had happened to him. The last thing that he said to me was that I'll bring them all home safe. My heart goes out to all of his family and friends. I know that he will be missed terribly. You are all in my prayers. I felt that I lost a friend because just in that short time that I had to talk with him he brightened up my day, made me laugh and had others laughing as well. He was a great guy and will be missed by so many. Please know that my heart, thoughts and prayers are with you and that I wear a dog tag with his name on it in remembrance of him.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I would also like to tell you about a website, http://groups.msn.com/SSPSoldierPor
traits/homepage,
where some wonderful people will make wood portraits of your fallen Hero for free for the immediate family. I became aware of this site when I wanted to do something special for Le Ron’s mother.

To The Family and Friends of Staff Sgt Robert J Wilson:
As the grandparents of a young soldier who recently deployed with him, we know that "these soldiers DO believe" they are in Iraq for the right reasons, just as your son has told you, our grandson tells us!
God Bless You and help you through this very hard time in your life. My grandfather who was a minister always told us, when we get to heaven, we will understand "why" we have hard times in our lives. Every troop member who is brave enough to get on that bus to start their tour of duty in Iraq, is a very special person.

With the deepest regret, I have just learned of the death of Staff Sergeant Wilson. As a Vietnam Veteran and the State Chaplain of the Georgia Society, Sons Of The American Revolution, I speak for our President, Charlie A. Newcomer, III and the more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia in humbly expressing the condolences of a grateful Society. Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. This precious life, lived and lost in love of America, epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… the family of one of America's best ...!!!
