Sophia Jacobson Obituary
SOPHIA HOODIN JACOBSON 91, of Charlotte, NC, died on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 at Elmcroft Assisted Living. Mrs. Jacobson was born on July 1, 1911, in Nivkis, Russia, a daughter of the late Nathan Hoodin and Esther Teleshevsky Hoodin. Mrs. Jacobson attended Woodward High School in Cincinnati, OH. She attended the University of Cincinnati and received her nursing certificate from the Nurses Training School connected with Jewish Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. She became a Registered Nurse in 1932 and worked as an operating room nurse and teacher at Metropolitan Hospital in New York City. She later became an emergency room nurse at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Elizabeth, NJ. She retired in 1974 after 42 years of nursing. Mrs. Jacobson was past president of the local chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women in Elizabeth, NJ. She was a lifetime member of Hadassah and a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. In 1976 Mrs. Jacobson retired to West Palm Beach, FL where she actively served on the Board of the local Hadassah chapter, raised money for cancer research and was an active member of ORT. She was a regular contributor of published articles in newsletters of these various organizations. On February 25, 1979 she received the Generations Award given annually to a Palm Beach County resident for outstanding leadership and fundraising for Israel Bonds. Mrs. Jacobson always had a passion for the State of Israel, and while missing her son Richard dearly, delighted in the opportunity to frequently visit her son and family in Israel. When the need arose for healthcare for low income families in Palm Beach County, Mrs. Jacobson was a founding member of the management team coordinating efforts by local civic leaders, medical professionals and other retirees to establish the Mid-County Medical Center. Over the years she never lost contact with extended family members. She always knew the right thing to say and the right thing to do at the right time. Her advice to her children and grandchildren was, you do something because you know it is right regardless of what others may think. Having dedicated her life to helping others, she always appreciated the help given to her at Merrywood Retirement Community and Elmcroft Assisted Living. Mrs. Jacobson is survived by her sons: Robert A. Jacobson, of Charlotte, and Richard S. Jacobson, of Ashkelon, Israel; her grandchildren: Erez N. Jacobson, Avyatar S. Jacobson, and Noa L. Jacobson, all of Ashkelon, Israel. Mrs. Jacobson was preceded in death by her husband, Irving K. "Rabbit" Jacobson, in May 1995.
