Stephen Voss, a retired FAU professor emeritus, passed away July 8, 2013 in Boca Raton, FL. Dr. Voss is survived by his beloved wife, Dr. Gay Sherman Voss; loving children, Stephen Voss II of Boca Raton, FL, Carol Johnson of Needham, MA, Jimmie Enderle of Bushnell, FL, Kathleen Woolrich of Orlando, FL, Angie West of Stuart, FL, Frances Dean of Greensboro, NC, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Dr. Stephen Voss was a member of the first faculty of Florida Atlantic University in 1964. Earlier, he attended Florida Southern College of Lakeland, FL and earned his masters and doctoral degrees at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. During World War II, he served as a Navy Medic, assigned to the 6th Naval Beach Battalion and was wounded in the Omaha Easy Red II section of the Normandy Invasion. The following year, he was involved in the invasion of Okinawa. Recently, since World War II, Dr. Voss received the Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor from the French Consul General of Miami for his service during the June 6, 1944, Invasion of Normandy, France. Stephen has been a teacher and a principal in Florida's public schools and is currently a retired Professor of Elementary Education at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL. He has a "courtesy" contract which enables him to serve as an official academic adviser to undergraduate Florida Atlantic University students preparing to become elementary school teachers. Florida Atlantic University is a state university with an enrollment of more than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Stephen entered the teaching profession in 1953 and has served in various school related capacities for more than fifty years. A memorial service will be held July 25, 2:00 PM, at the First United Methodist Church, 625 NE Mizner Blvd, Boca Raton, FL. In memory of Stephen, the family asks that a donation be made to Florida Atlantic University to support the Stephen Voss Scholarship Fund.
