William Dewart Obituary
WILLIAM T. DEWART, III Of Delray Beach, Florida, passed away on Monday, September 15, 2003 after a courageous battle with emphysema. He was 69 years old. It is with great sorrow that we mourn his passing. Born in New York City, Mr. Dewart lived in Greenwich, Connecticut until moving to Delray Beach in 1981. He was the son of Catharine Ashbrook and William T. Dewart, Jr. His father was publisher of the former The New York Sun newspaper and during World War II was a Major in the Army and served as the executive of an operational branch of the OSS in Italy. Mr. Dewart was educated at Hobart College and the Choate School and served in the Army stationed in Japan from 1955 to 1957. He was a trust officer with the former State National Bank of Connecticut and served as a Vice President and Trust Officer with the former First National Bank in Palm Beach, later the First Union National Bank. He retired in 1998. A resident of Greenwich for over forty years, Mr. Dewart was on the Board of Directors of the Greenwich YMCA and in the late sixties was active with the First Selectman's office in establishing an ongoing youth program in Greenwich. He served a number of terms as an elected member of the Representative Town Meeting. He was a founding member of the Stanwich Club and a member of the Indian Harbor Yacht Club where he enjoyed participation in the weekend YRA races on Long Island sound. In Delray Beach. he was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon. He was a Director of the Landings Condominium Association and a former member of the Gulfstream Bath and Tennis Club. He also served as a volunteer with the C.R.O.S. Ministries and in particular with the Community Food Pantry in Delray Beach. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, the former Carol Gay Curtiss of Delray Beach, Florida; his daughters: Wendy Altman, Barbara Williamson and Laura Bartone, all of Darien, Connecticut; and seven grandchildren. He is predeceased by a sister, Julia Tallman Krog of Greenwich. Mr. Dewart also leaves behind an extended family; his beloved aunt, Elinore Harrington of Greenwich and Delray Beach, who raised and nurtured him and his sister, along with his cousins: Wynne Killebrew, Phyllis Greene, Mary Dooney and Thomas W. Dewart, Jr. The family wishes to express its profound gratitude to the doctors, nurses and support staff of Bethesda Hospital for their skill and compassion in caring for Bill during his final days and to Dr. Ted Bush, Rev. Joan Abell, the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church, and his many friends for their prayers, kindness and ongoing support during his long illness. There will be a private family graveside service and interment at Putnam Cemetery, Greenwich, Connecticut. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, Delray Beach at a date to be determined.
