Michael Lewis Obituary

Michael Ray Lewis, age 77, passed away on February 15, 2022 in Grover Beach, CA due to liver cancer with family at his side. He was born to Virgil and Gladys in Farmington, New Mexico on March 15, 1944. Mike leaves his wife Barbara (Olson), brother Barry, son Michael, daughter-in-law Lucia, grandson Jacob and his wife Monica and granddaughter Izadora among many beloved family and friends.

Mike became a sheriff in 1965, serving in many positions. From 1986 to 1992 Mike served as Captain for Riverside County Sheriff Dept. and Commander of Indio and Palm Desert stations. Mike strongly believed law enforcement needed to work in partnership with the community and implemented many such programs. He was a willing and trusted mentor to many who knew him. He influenced and inspired those under his command. Other careers included professional photographer and private investigator. Mike was a loyal friend, displayed the highest integrity and was always willing to help others. He was courageous with a quiet strength and a great sense of humor. It was an honor to have had Michael in our lives. There will be a celebration of life in May for those who knew and loved him.

My condolences to the Lewis families.
I was friends with brother Barry but knew Mike to be a dedicated law officer and stand up guy.
He left our world a better place.

I truly enjoyed my time with Mike. He was a great mentor for me in sharing his knowledge regarding our government and politics. I loved being around Mike because he always got a laugh out of my crazy behavior even though I know there were times he had to be embarrassed. His energy was inspiring for me. The amount of quality work he performed at their home was inspiring. His BBQ ribs and fish were second to none. I will miss throwing darts and sharing with Mike personal conversations while he was BBQing. He was a very, very humble man who had accomplished so much in his life. I knew Barbara prior to her and Mike getting married. Barbara was my Barbara (Tongate) closest friend and I also consider Barbara a good friend. His genuine love for his Barbara was evident always during the happy days we spent together as couples. Mike also introduced my to a couple of my favorite wineries (Peacock Cellars/Sculpterra). I can simple say" Mike was a Jack of all Trades and a MASTER of all." Laughter is a great remedy for curing many things. I will miss Mike and the laughter we shared together.
