Carol Stephens Long
Sept. 30, 1944 - March 17, 2024
ROCHESTER, New York - Carol Stephens Long, age 79, of Rochester, NY, passed away Sunday, March 17, 2024.
Carol was born on September 30, 1944 to Wesley Delmar Stephens and Louise "Tip" Stephens in Columbus, OH. She grew up with her younger sisters, Wendy and Anne, in Bloomington, IL, where the family moved after the war. Carol graduated from Bloomington High School in 1962, and Rice University in 1966 with a BS degree in Chemistry. After graduation, she married her college sweetheart and love of her life, John Broaddus Long. The couple moved to Rochester in 1969, and celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary in August 2023.
Carol is survived by her loving husband, John Long; her children: Jennifer (and husband Marc) Van Doren, Owen (and wife Chiara) Long, and Jack (and wife Sandy) Long; her sisters: Wendy (and husband Jim) Cullen, and Anne (and husband Tom) Bardo; and grandchildren: Deane, Wesley, Madeline, and Audrey.
Carol was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She was a math and science whiz, Churchill Solitaire champion, voracious reader, and amazing cook. She was an incredibly talented fabric artist, always finding new ways to express her creativity, including by designing and sewing brightly colored quilts that hang proudly and prominently in her home and in many of her family members' homes. When she was not in Rochester, she enjoyed spending time at the family's condo in Glade Springs, WV, and visiting with family.
A celebration of her life will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

I met Carol through her dear friend Jean Geisel, and we spent many happy times going to lunch at Warfield's in Clifton Springs and visiting the Main Street Arts Gallery. Carol was so easy to get to know, and I'll miss her terribly. My sympathy to her family and friends, and peace to all who were lucky to know her.
