CARLOCK - David E. "Dave" Atherton, age 75, of Carlock, Illinois, peacefully passed away at 3:02 PM on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, Illinois.
Born on February 13, 1950, in Fairview, Michigan, Dave was the beloved son of Joseph and Wanda Handrich Atherton. He married Peggy "Peg" Cutler on November 25, 1972, in Congerville, Illinois, who survives him.
Dave is lovingly remembered by his two children, Chad Atherton of Carlock, Illinois, and Jill (Brian) Atherton of Bonnie, Illinois. He was a proud grandfather to David (Phyllis) Atherton of Tarawa Terrace, North Carolina, Danielle (Evan) Dehart of Minier, Illinois, and Denver Atherton of Carlock, Illinois. He also cherished his two great-grandchildren, Sadie and David Logan Atherton, both of Tarawa Terrace, North Carolina. His brother, Joe (Judy) Atherton of Congerville, Illinois, also survives him.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A graduate of Eureka High School in Eureka, Illinois, Dave served his country honorably in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971. Devoted to his community, he was a member of the Carlock Fire Protection District for 45 years and served as Chief for 20 years. His dedication and leadership were pillars of strength for the community he loved.
Dave had a deep passion for the outdoors, whether on the water or in the woods, he found joy and peace in nature's embrace. He had a love for animals.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at the Carlock Fire Department in Carlock, Illinois. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at the Carlock Fire Department, with Pastor Mick Duffy officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to the Carlock Fire Department, Carlock, Illinois. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, Bloomington, Illinois.
