Donald Wood Obituary

Donald D. Wood

November 6, 1935 - October 30, 2025

Donald D. Wood, of Bloomington, Illinois, was born on November 6, 1935, to Darley D. Wood and Elsie B. (Waltz) Wood. He was born in the residence apartment of Bloomington's Park Store, where his father worked as a grocer.

The family later moved to Normal, where his father became a union bricklayer. When World War II ended, his father built a new home for the family. Tragically, he passed away when Donald was just 11 years old, a loss that placed early responsibility on Donald to help his mother and younger sisters.

Donald's entire education took place in Normal, beginning at Eugene Field Elementary, continuing through Old Central School, and culminating with his graduation from Normal Community High School in 1953.

After high school, Donald was hired by State Farm Auto and soon learned it was possible to work part-time while attending Illinois State Normal University (ISNU). He did so and graduated in the one-hundredth ISNU graduating class, earning a high school teaching certificate. After three years of teaching, he returned to Bloomington. He completed his career as an Independent Insurance Agent, enjoying the independence of self-employment and the satisfaction of serving his community.

Throughout his life, Donald found joy in home ownership, travel, and lifelong learning. He and his wife enjoyed many touring vacations, both by automobile and later by motor coach, visiting all of the lower 48 states and parts of Canada.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Frances, Edith, and Lois. He is survived by one sister, Marian Volz, and seven nieces and nephews.

He married Lois Steege on September 20, 1975, at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple shared 45 years of marriage until her passing on June 28, 2021.

Interment will be in Park Hill Cemetery in Bloomington on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. Memorial contributions may be left to a charity of the donor's choice.
