Duane Askew Obituary

Duane C. Askew

April 30, 1938 - July 7, 2024

WAUSAU, Wisconsin - Duane Clyde Askew, 86, of Wausau, WI, died on Sunday, July 7, 2024. He was born on April 30, 1938, in Kankakee IL, to the late Clyde and Dorothy Askew.

He leaves behind his children, Carrie Noonan of Madison, and Todd (Patrick) Askew of Watertown MA; grandchildren, Claudia, Samuel, and Peter; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

After finishing high school, Duane continued his education at Olivet Nazarene College, earning a bachelor's degree and then went to The University of Illinois, Champaign, IL, where he attained advanced degrees in music and education. Duane had a passion for serving children as an Elementary School Principal. He worked in several school districts in Clifton and Normal, IL, and Wausau, WI, throughout his career.

Duane met his future wife through a common friend. They married in December 1963, and had two children, Carrie, and Todd. Duane had several hobbies, but the one that brought him the most happiness in life was playing the clarinet and saxophone in the music scene throughout the communities he lived. On any given weekend, you could find Duane p

laying his instruments as part of a band, whether it was a community festival or a community theater, he simply loved making music. Duane also enjoyed sailing, reading, and volunteering. The family had many wonderful summer vacations on the sandy shores of Lake Michigan. Duane and Patsy were also able to travel far and wide.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 59 years, Patsy Lou Askew; and his brother, Dennis Askew.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 53044 N. 44th Ave., Wausau, WI, 54401.

Mr. Askew was Principal at Oakland Grade School when my youngest son was referred there for a year for extra help. Mr. Askew was quite cordial to my son & our family & reassuring & kind explaining his goal plan. Lynne Randall was his teacher.& she was so good working with my son, Christian. Thank you Mr.Askew for all you did. You & Mrs. Randall instilled such positivity & confidence in leRning. He was an excellent educator.
God Bless the family with my my deepest & heartfelt sympathy in your ti.e of sorrow

When I moved to Normal, IL in 1979, Mr. Askew was our Principal at Glenn Elementary School. I have always remembered his kindness and support of the new kid arriving late in the school year. I am sorry for your loss and will keep your family and his friends in my thoughts.
