Gary Lynn Bruce
April 25, 1945 - September 16, 2025
Gary Lynn Bruce, 80, of Roanoke, Ill., passed away peacefully at home on September 16, 2025, surrounded by the love of his devoted family. Born on April 25, 1945, in Temple, Texas,, Gary was the cherished son of Richard and Edra Hazel Bruce, who precede him in death.
Gary's life was marked by quiet strength, unwavering dedication, and deep love for his family, faith, country and community.
He built a long and steady career at Caterpillar in Peoria, where he worked for 26 years before retiring in 2003. Never one to sit still, Gary continued to serve others during his retirement, working with We Care for 13 years and joyfully driving cars for Roanoke Motors. His days were full of purpose, kindness, and connection.
On October 20, 1973, Gary married the love of his life, Carolyn Ehrnthaller. Together they built a life centered on faith, family, and laughter. Carolyn survives him, as do their three children, Jennifer Bruce of Roanoke; Brian (Jennifer) Bruce of Southaven, Miss., and Dan (Kelly) Bruce of Franklin, Wisc. Gary was a proud and loving grandfather to Gabriella, Bridgett, Isaac, Eliana, and Amelia all of whom brought him endless joy and pride.
A true patriot, Gary served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1965-1969, including a year stationed in Vietnam. His service was recognized with several awards symbolizing his courage and commitment. He was a proud member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus St. Francis of Assisi Council.
Gary's faith was the cornerstone of his life. He served his parish community at St. Joseph Catholic Church with humility and grace participating as a lector, usher, and member of the parish council. His presence was quiet but deeply felt; he was a man who led not with words, but with example.
To know Gary was to be touched by his gentle spirit, warm heart, and quiet humor. He was the kind of man who always showed up with a helping hand, a kind word, or a listening ear. His legacy is one of love, service, and deep-rooted integrity. He will be missed beyond measure and remembered with hearts full of gratitude for the time we were blessed to share with him.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to OSF Home Health care, OSF Hospice, and Home Helpers Home Care of East Peoria.
