George Flynn Obituary

George Richard Flynn

October 16, 1944 - August 31, 2025

BLOOMINGTON - George Richard Flynn, J.D., C.P.A., aged 80, of Bloomington, IL passed away peacefully at 6:57 p.m. on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Luther Oaks in Bloomington surrounded by his loved ones.

His funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Bloomington, with the Rev. Bo Schmitt and the Rev. Andru O'Brien concelebrating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Normal. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington.

George was born October 16, 1944, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, the son of John A. and Margaret Delmar Flynn. He married Irene Ann Bennington on August 19, 1967, at St. Mary's Church in Bloomington. They recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary with their family.

George is survived by Irene and their six children: George K. (Sarah) Flynn of Burr Ridge; Katie (Mike) Pizzamiglio of Bloomington; Mary (Chris) Freeburg of Winnetka; John (Katie) Flynn of Bloomington; Leo (Kim) Flynn of Chicago; and Bridget Flynn of Springfield; and his legacy continues through his eight cherished grandchildren: Maeve Flynn, William Freeburg, Patrick Freeburg, Edward "Teddy" Flynn, Rose Flynn, Lola Flynn, Collin Flynn, and Stella Flynn. Also surviving are his brother, Michael (Jerrilyn) Flynn, and sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Flynn, and Kathleen "Curly" Flynn, all of Bloomington.

He was preceded in death by his parents and Irene's parents, James and Irene Bennington, his uncle, Rev. Fr. George T. Flynn; his sister, Anne Flynn Dunn; and brothers Patrick A. Flynn, Thomas E. Flynn, James J. Flynn, and Timothy D. Flynn; and his nephew, Daniel Flynn.

George graduated from Trinity High School in Bloomington in 1962 and earned his Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from St. Ambrose University in 1966, where he served as Senior Class President. He attended the University of Illinois College of Law and earned his Juris Doctor in 1969. He practiced law in Bloomington for over 50 years.

A member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, George served on parish committees over many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a past president of the Bloomington Exchange Club.

He was a lifelong fan of both Notre Dame and Illini football and continued attending games for both well into his 70s, often with a transistor radio in hand so he could hear the play-by-play of the game he was watching from the stands or listen to the other one if Illinois and Notre Dame were playing concurrently. He found great pleasure in telling stories of all kinds, but he was most expressive when telling the ones drawn from his own past. He also enjoyed the music of the Irish Tenors and his Cheshire grin was always brightest when they sang When Irish Eyes are Smiling or when he was in the presence of his grandchildren, who he adored.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Church, Central Catholic High School, or the University of Illinois I-Fund. To share memories or offer condolences, please visit www.carmodyflynn.com.

In this time of loss, we remember George's life with gratitude, not only for the sacrifices he made along the way but for his perseverance and the love he shared with his family and friends. We take comfort in knowing that his Irish Eyes are smiling over us.

To you Irene and Family, I extend my deepest sympathy and love. You, George and Irene, have been my two best friends since our days at Trinity (Central Catholic) High School. I have been praying for you, and even though I was unable to get together with George again, I hope I will see you, Irene, once again. Your friend, John Mills

Condolences to Irene and immediate and extended family of George. I grew up with the Flynn's at Central Catholic and my husband Bill was a longtime client of George. May God rest his soul and give his family strength to remember the good times.

To the Flynn Family, my condolences and thoughts are with you all during this time. You are all such great people and such a fun family. I´ve been lucky to get to know you all over the years and your dad surely is proud of every one of you. Lean on each other during this time. One of the many benefits of having a big (sometimes chaotic) family!!! Sorry I can´t make it down this weekend but you are all in my thoughts. Brian Riordan

I worked for Mr. Flynn in the C2 East building a long time ago. He was kind and I enjoyed working for him. My deepest sympathy to his wife and family. May George rest in the arms of Jesus. He will be missed.
