Guy Williams Obituary

Guy Edward Williams

June 18, 1940 - May 15, 2024

NORMAL - Guy Edward Williams, age 83, of Normal, IL, previously of Decatur, died on May 15, 2024.

Guy was born June 18, 1940, in Chicago and spent his childhood in Lagrange Park. He attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, graduating from the U of I Law School in 1965. The Monday after graduation, he started at Samuels Miller law firm in Decatur where he practiced estate and probate law in Central Illinois for the next 50 years. Guy took great pride in his law firm and his 50 years of service to clients. He was also proud of his service to the Decatur community where he was an active board member and officer of many civic and charitable organizations.

A lifelong advocate of the University of Illinois, Guy cheered for all U of I sports teams and knew every trail at Allerton Park. He had a passion for the outdoors and loved hiking and kayaking on the Sangamon River. Guy and his wife Young Sun restored an old farmstead near Maroa, where he planted 300 apple trees to develop a thriving orchard and native prairie meadow. The couple also lived in Monticello, where Guy enjoyed walking to the town square for breakfast on Saturday mornings. Abraham Lincoln was a personal hero, and he enjoyed reading about Abe's history as a young lawyer traveling the circuit on horseback. A farmer at heart, Guy grew zinnias and tomatoes in Normal's community garden, sharing his bountiful harvests with friends.

Guy is survived by his lovely wife, Young Sun; his son, Brett L. Williams, and daughter-in-law, Sarah of Oak Park; his daughter, Brooke N. Williams and her husband, Christopher Burke of Kittery Point, ME; and his stepson, Erick Lee and wife Christina of Bloomington. Guy's grandchildren include: Ethan and Ava Williams, Conrad and Frances Burke, Mack Lee, and Matilda and Miriam Doxsie. Guy is survived by his brother Dr. Scott L. Williams and wife Anne of Sarasota, FL; and his sister, Ann Beller and husband Marty of Seminole, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward H. Williams and Nada C. Williams of Lagrange Park.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Guy was a graduate of the U of Illinois College of Law in 1965, and his remaining classmates remember him fondly. We will honor him, and our other deceased classmates, at our next reunion.

Guy married Young Sun. I had felt close to Young Sun. I was happy they found one another. Young Sun, I visited Anna on Saturday. I go at least once a year, usually on Memorial Weekend. The simple flowers are always perfect. I'm glad I have the memories of the time your family was in Decatur. I'm thankful you have a strong faith, and your family will be reunited.

Guy was a fellow lawyer whom I met in 1973. Guy was an outstanding estates and trusts lawyer. He had a wonderful sense of humor and an infectious laugh. Guy spent virtually every workday over the noon hour going to the YMCA when it was downtown running with a group out to the west end of Fairview Park and back. He was handsome and aged well. I am saddened to learn of his death.
