John Humphries Cope, 76, of Hudson, Illinois, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 11:33 p.m., after a short battle with lung cancer.

John was born on May 8, 1949, in Bloomington, Illinois, to James C. and Ruth Humphries Cope. He graduated from Octavia High School in 1967, and then graduated in 1971 from Eastern Illinois University where he was a member of Sigma Pi Fraternity. John dedicated much of his life to farming in rural Hudson and was a proud member of the Secor Sportsman's Club. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Normal, Illinois.

On September 5, 1970, John married Peggy Loggan in Champaign, Illinois. Peggy survives him along with their three children: Elizabeth (Beth) D. (Jason Owens) Cope of Fairmount, Georgia; Paul W. (Katie) Cope of Hudson, Illinois; and John M. (Rebecca) Cope of Normal, Illinois. John was also a beloved grandfather to Gavin, Grayson, Garrett, and Palmer Cope of Hudson. He was also loved by Jason's children Jillian, Stephen and Faith. He is survived by his sister, Marcia Small of Calhan, Colo., a niece and nephew and a sister-in-law. John was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 9th, at 11 a.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Normal with Pastor Kent King-Nobles officiating. Visitation will take place Friday, August 8th, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home and from 9:30 to 11 a.m., prior to the service at the church. A private family graveside service will be held at Hudson Township Cemetery in Hudson, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church in Normal, Illinois, or the Hudson Public Library.
