SPRINGFIELD - John M. Eckert, 66, of Springfield, Ill., passed away on February 15, 2026. Born March 21, 1959, to his parents, Albert and Nancy Eckert, who preceded him in death. John loved his Grandma Grace; he was always her favorite.
John was an unwavering public servant until his very last days. He worked for the Department on Aging for over 20 years, finishing his career as the Deputy Division Manager and was set to retire on February 28. His work for the State of Illinois transformed many lives and strengthened the services that support our aging community and persons with disabilities. Through his dedication, he helped expand critical resources, access to care and influenced as well as implemented laws to improve the lives of countless people while also being a devoted son, brother and uncle.
His smile lit up every room he entered. His work changed lives for the better and his compassion and love gave people hope. John embodied perseverance and a deep commitment to finding purpose beyond his life's disadvantages. He showed that meaning is not defined by circumstance, but how you choose to live, connect and serve. To those who knew him, he was an inspiration and an example of how to live fully and love generously.
John leaves behind his siblings, Jim (Sharon), Grace, Carol, Susan Eckert Dessa (Jeff) and Martha; his nephew and nieces, James, Grace, Pepper and Kate, and great-nieces, Reina, Marina and Iona.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral service. A visitation to honor and remember his life will be held at Ellinger-Kunz Funeral Home (530 N 5th Street, Springfield IL 62702) on Wednesday, February 25, from 3 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, John has requested memorials be made to The Springfield Center for Independent Living (SCIL) or the Animal Protective League (APL of Springfield).
