Larry Schultz Obituary

Larry Ray Schultz

July 26, 1948 - June 15, 2025

Larry Ray Schultz, 76, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 15, at his home in southern California with his loving wife, Judy, beside him.

Larry was born on July 26, 1948, in Bloomington, Illinois, to Nellie Mae Alvey (Watson) and Raymond Preston Schultz. He graduated from University High School (U-High) in 1966, attended Gale Institute and ISU, and worked in the airline business before being drafted into the Army in 1968 to serve in the Vietnam War. During his service, he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He was stationed in Hawaii before being honorably discharged and returning home to Normal, Illinois.

Larry worked for Ray Schultz Tile Company as a ceramic tile setter for a few years before moving to Riverside, California in 1985. He was a regional sales manager for TemCo Fireplaces until he retired in 2000.

Larry met the love of his life, Judy Jefferson Vance, at a young age, though they didn't marry until 1991. They designed and built their home in the mountains outside of San Diego in 1998. Larry had many passions and hobbies: horseback riding, golfing, surfing, and rescuing cats, dogs, and one very important parrot, named Monk. Larry could never say no to an animal in need; caring for their menagerie enriched his life.

He will be remembered for his warm laughter, captivating storytelling, wonderful sense of humor, and his calming presence. His family will always cherish the time they had with him.

Larry is survived by his wife, Judy Jefferson Vance; his sisters, Linda (Paul) Ernst and Marianne Suelter; and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

At Larry's request, there will be no services. If you wish to remember him, he asks that you donate to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, National Headquarters, 525 East Cotati Avenue, Cotati, California,94931.

Upon Mark and I marrying on February 18, 1978 we attended Grace Methodist Church in 1981-1982, where we came to know Larry's mother Nellie Mae and Irvin Alvey as we became LIFE LONG FRIENDS. We spent almost EVERY FRIDAY evening at Nellie and Irv Alvey's home in Normal IL.
