Nancy Stephens Obituary

Nancy Jean Stephens

Jan. 12, 1950 - Feb. 11, 2024

NORMAL - Nancy Jean Stephens, 74, of Normal, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family.

Her memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 16, 2024, at First United Methodist Church, Normal with Rev. Kathy King-Nobles officiating. A private family burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Normal. Visitation will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m., Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church, Normal or the American Cancer Society.

Nancy was born January 12, 1950, in Fairbury, the daughter of Wayne and Irene (Tinker) Cording. Family was the cornerstone of Nancy's life, and she loved the precious time spent with them. She married John Stephens on September 16, 1973, in Chatsworth. He survives.

Also surviving are three sons: Gregory (Jessica), Matthew (Allison) and Michael (Stephanie) Stephens; six grandchildren: Alexander, Julia, Landon, Penelope, Aspen and River Stephens; two sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Fandel, Germantown Hills and Sharon Perzee, Daphne, AL; and one brother, Richard (Deborah) Cording, Plymouth, MI.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Nancy was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, and with John, she spent countless hours volunteering at her children's schools and PTO functions. Through the years, family always came first, and she loved the chaos of children playing in her home.

Nancy was very creative and had a passion for crafts. She created many pieces that are considered family treasures. She sewed together many of her children's Halloween costumes and decorated many of their birthday cakes. Later in life, she began making homemade cards for her family and friends and enjoyed researching family ancestry, serving as the family historian.

"We are grateful for the many years we were blessed to have her in our lives. The empty spot in our hearts will be replaced with years of memories, lessons, and laughter."

I'm sorry I am unable to be with you, her family, today or tomorrow. I knew Nancy from Faith Circle at First United, when we first formed. Then she came to my rescue a few times to babysit my boys, John and Jeff. Their favorite time was going out in the yard and shooting baskets with the boys. I am so sorry for your loss.

Our sympathy to family of Nancy Cording Stephens. We grew up in Chatsworth Methodist Church with Cordings. Her parents and my parents were all active in church. Her sister Betty was in same HS class as my brother Bill. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Kay Irwin Lindley
