Paul Young Obituary

Paul Young

January 22, 1943 - August 18, 2024

BLOOMINGTON - Paul Young, 81, of Bloomington, IL, passed away August 18, 2024, with loved ones by his side.

Paul was born on January 22, 1943, in Decatur, IL. He attended Bowen High School in Bowen, IL, where he proudly reported to have graduated 22nd in his class (of 25 students). He graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Illinois in Champaign and returned in later years to complete his Executive MBA. He proudly served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army. He was an instructor for the United States Engineer School at Fort Belvoir in Washington D.C. and a Supply Battalion Officer (S-4) for the Army Combat Engineers in Vietnam. His meritorious service earned him the Bronze Star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device.

Paul returned to McLean County after his service and made two decisions that would change his life forever. He started his own architectural firm and married Linda Williams.

He married Linda on January 22, 1972. Linda insisted on getting married on his birthday so Paul would never forget their anniversary. They enjoyed a tremendously rewarding life together until her passing in 2016. They were devoted to their children, Jon and Johanna, and adored their grandchildren, Max and Molly. Paul and Linda enjoyed many years with friends and family at their cabin on Lake Bloomington. Affectionately named "Linda Land," it was a place where they welcomed everybody to come spend a relaxing day together on the lake.

With Linda's support, they started Young Architects, Inc. and built it into a successful firm that was a fixture in McLean County for half a century. Paul's innumerous contributions to his community can be seen all over Central Illinois and will stand as a legacy to his memory for many years to come. He was devoted to his clients, routinely working seven days a week, still serving them until the day he passed.

He brought endless joy and laughter to everyone he met and will be remembered for his selfless nature, boundless energy and permanent smile.

Paul is survived by his loving children: Jon Young of Bloomington, IL, and Johanna (Brent) Gardner of Hudson, IL; two cherished grandchildren: Max and Molly; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his two brothers: Ray (Kiyo) Young of Fullerton, CA and David (Sandy) Young of Bloomington, IL. Paul is also survived by the countless friends and loved ones that he considered family and brought so much joy to his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Olga Young.

Visitation will be Saturday, August 31, 2024, from 9:00 - 11:00 AM at Calvert & Metzler Memorial Home, in Bloomington, IL. The Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 AM. Bloomington Normal American Legion Honor Guard will perform military honors. Interment will take place at Dawson Cemetery, North of Dawson Lake in Ellsworth, IL.

Memorial contributions may be made to an organization of your choice.

I knew Paul all my life. He and Linda were good friends of my parents, Dave & Bonnie Freeman. My dad worked with Paul at the Middleton architectural firm in the early 1960's. Our family would always make it a point to stop and visit the Young family anytime we were in the Bloomington area. I remember the Volkswagon beetle cars he drove back in the early 70's. He was always fun to be around, and even when I was a little kid, I never felt he talked down to me. So sad to hear he passed this year. My sincere condolences to Jon and Johanna on behalf of the Freemans.

Paul hired me as a draftsman after my senior year of high school. I had the privilege of working for Young Architects for five years before leaving for State Farm. Paul was a friend and mentor and remembered me years and years after I left his firm and would bump into him in the community.

He will be missed
