Philip Hartzler Obituary

Philip Dean Hartzler

March 19, 1949 - October 24, 2024

"See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near." James 5:7-8.

MINONK - On October 24, 2024, Philip Dean Hartzler, 75, of Minonk, passed away peacefully at his home.

Phil was born on March 19, 1949, in Bloomington, Ill. to Paul W. Hartzler and Aldine G. (Yordy) Hartzler. He graduated from Minonk Dana Rutland High School in 1967. He graduated from the University of Illinois in Agriculture and Economics in 1971. He married Linda Ruth Bitner on June 13, 1970. Phil was a fourth-generation farmer and raised his family on the farmstead built by his great grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Linda; daughters: Paula (Jeff) Mustin of Lubbock, Texas, Beth (Matthew) Harrell of Youngstown, Ohio, Jennifer (Jonathan) Lembright of Bangkok, Thailand, Carrie (Ryan) Lambert of Indianapolis, Ind.; grandchildren: J.P. and Jake Mustin, Ella, Ben, Kate and Lucy Harrell, Addie, Abe and Emma Lembright, Maggie Lambert; sister, Mary (Gary) Slutz; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Aldine Hartzler; and brother, Roger Hartzler; and infant granddaughter, Lauren Faith Mustin.

Phil grew up and attended Waldo/Prairieview Mennonite Church in Flanagan, Ill. where he served for many years as an elder and Sunday School teacher. He was currently a member of Christ Community Church in Gridley, Ill. He was a past board member and secretary of the Woodford County Farm Bureau. One of Phil's greatest joys was being a farmer which led him to embark on a career as a Beck's Hybrids seed dealer for 16 years. Phil not only treasured time with his family on the farm but welcomed everyone to experience the profession he loved.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, November 3, 2024 from 3 to 6 p.m., and a funeral service on Monday, November 4, 2024 at 10 a.m. Both will be held at Christ Community Church in Gridley, Ill., 406 W 7th Street. Burial will take place immediately following the service at Waldo Township Cemetery. Calvert-Johnson & Froelich Memorial Home are handling the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Christ Community Church in Gridley, OSF Home Health/Hospice or ALS United Greater Chicago.

I do not personally know you but I've always heard what a strong family bond you have. Plus, I'm sure I heard there was lots of singing involved. Bless you all as his health journey has come to an end. Heaven gained an angel.

Linda and family,
We are thinking of you at this special time. We are saddened but also rejoicing knowing that Phil is not suffering any more. What an inspiring life he lived, an example to those who knew him. We know that is a very difficult thing to give up a loved one but we will continue to keep all of you in our prayers.

What a great loss. Phil and his knowledge of the land and love of his family will be greatly missed. My prayers to the family. He may be gone but his personality and compassion will be always with many that shared time with him.
