CLINTON - Richard "Dick" Dale Baum, 96, of Clinton, IL, passed away 3:08 AM, Thursday, April 4, 2024, at Sugar Creek, Normal, IL.
Services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at the Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, IL, with Mark Cooper and Ernie Harvey, Jr. officiating. Burial will be 10:00 AM Thursday, April 11, 2024, at East Lawn Cemetery, Bloomington, IL. Visitation will be 9:00 - 11:00 AM Wednesday at the funeral home.
Dick was born January 11, 1928 in Carlock, IL. The only child born to Arthur W. and Loretta (Schrock) Baum. After graduating from Carlock High School, Dick attended Bluffton College in Bluffton, OH. He returned home to Carlock where, in 1948, he became an operating partner at his father's car dealership, Baum Motor Company.
Dick married Marjorie J. Moser September 4, 1948. The pair were married until Marjorie's death in 2020. In 1964, Dick and Marjorie moved their three children from Carlock to Clinton when purchasing Holtz Chevrolet Buick. Dick was President of Baum Chevrolet Buick from 1964 to 1992 and remained active in the business through his death. Personal service was important to him and he carried this throughout his career.
A talented musician, Dick enjoyed playing the marimba, singing in choirs, including the Bloomington Normal Barbershop Chorus and the gospel quartet, the Evangelaires for 15 years Dick served on the Mennonite and John Warner Hospital boards and actively volunteered his time with the Mennonite Central Committee and Habitat for Humanity in Florida.
Someone who never met a stranger, Dick loved traveling near and far, collecting new friends along the way. He and Marjorie traveled to Russia, Switzerland, Germany, Colombia, Bolivia, New Zealand, Australia, and across the United States in their motorcoach.
Dick is survived by his two children: Stephanie (Mike) Company and Scott (Nancy) Baum; grandchildren: Joseph (Carrie) Company, Jeffrey Company, Rachel Torbert, Janell (Spencer) Thomas; and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Stephen Baum; and wife, Marjorie.
Given Dick's love of people and service, donations may be made to Little Galilee Christian Camp, 7539 Little Galilee Road, Clinton, IL, 61727; or to Camp Friedenswald, 15406 Watercress Way, Cassopolis, MI, 49031-9532.

We are so sorry for your loss. Richard was a true humanitarian who cared for others more than himself. I give credit to him for leading me to God and helping me to quit smoking. A big loss for all of us who knew him.

Recalling childhood memories of living next door to the Baum family in Carlock and attending Carlock Mennonite Church. I loved hearing Dick playing the marimba! Regretfully, we aren´t able to attend your dad´s services. We extend our condolences to Steffi, Scott and their families. May God grant you peace and comfort.

Met Dick twice in showroom during sales transactions intermissions with salesman. On first occasion, he drove me home in Bloomington from Clinton. Second occasion was also in showroom where we chatted and he remembered me from the ride home years earlier. Very gregarious, engaging man. Someone who registers in one´s heart and mind for his genuine and friendly personality. Sympathy and condolences to his family. I was simply a customer (and still am) but still feel a huge loss on behalf of humanity. We are diminished with his passing. Rich Stephenson

Steffie and Scott, My heart aches for you because of your loss but heavens gain. Your dad holds a special place in my heart since I was 9 years old. He was in a high school play at Carlock with my aunt Evelyn, Lucille Coulter, and (Dr.) John Stutzman singing in a quartet. Many good memories (blessings) through the years with your family. Your mom was there by your dads side with a beautiful smile. You have so much to be thankful for with such a strong heritage.
My sympathy to your family,
Joyce and Windell Kessinger

Dick was an Angel of God. And he was a great guy. I traded my `56 Chevy convertible in to him at Clinton for my first new car, a Chevy station wagon in 1961. He was always sincere and honest to everyone and lived by the Golden Rule. My condolences to his Family.

Richard, Baum and Mrs. Baum were two of the nicest people I have ever met. Dick was always happy and willing to work with you to get things done. If everybody had an attitude like Richard Baum´s, life would be a totally better . I have total respect for Richard and Mrs. Baum for the fine family they have raised. Sorry for your loss, Stephanie and Scott.

He was a fine musician and tenor; we traded autos as he brought the paperwork ready to go in Chicago. A lovely family also in business.
