Albert Tyler Upham

Qpu,sgobits2 UPHAM - Albert Tyler Upham, passed away in Yorba Linda, California on December 25, 2007. He was 90. Tyler was born on January 24, 1917 in St. Paul , Minnesota , the child of Albert T. and Helen (Dickson) Upham. He attended the University of Minnesota , graduating with a bachelor's degree in journalism in 1940. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. In 1945, he was hired by Henry R. Luce to help build the western distribution network for Time, Inc., the publisher ofTime, Life, Sports Illustrated, and Fortune m agazines. He relocated first to Denver , then in 1950 to the Los Angeles area where he helped to found the Los Angeles office. He served as western regional sales and distribution manager for Time, Inc. for 30 years. After his retirement from Time, Inc. on 1975, he founded a publishing consulting business, and represented Business Week,The Sporting News, and Mad Magazine.until his permanent retirement in 1990. Throughout his career in the publishingindustry, Tyler was respected for his honesty, hard work, h igh integrity, and long-lasting friendships.Tyler was a life-long Presbyterian. He was a member of San Marino Community Church for more than 50 years, where he served asa church elder. He also served on the board of trustees of the San Francisco Theological Seminary.Tyler married Jane Katherine Steadman in 1943. They celebrated 64 years of marriage together and a close and loving relationship. Tyler was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Albert Tyler Upham, III in 1994. He is survived by his wife Jane; by one son, Dr. Steadman Upham of Tulsa, Oklahoma and his wife Peggy; by a daughter-in law, Louise Upham of Newport Beach; by four grandchildren Jon Upham of Tustin, Megan Upham of San Francisco, Erin Upham of Eugene, Oregon, and Nathan Upham of Los Angeles; andby four great grandchildren. Tyler will be remembered as a loving husband and father, and a good friend whose grace and quiet dignity affected all around him. A private family service was held at Mountain View Mortuary, Altadena, California, and interment f ollowed.
