Daniel Castro Obituary

Daniel Carver Castro
January 22, 1921 - June 1, 2016

Long time Pasadena resident and community activist, Danny Castro, passed away in peaceful sleep on June1, 2016. Born in Floresville Texas in 1921 to Leopoldo and Maria Castro, he was orphaned at an early age then raised in California.
Danny served in the California Conservation Corp at Oak Grove Park in Pasadena. During WWII he served in the US Army 91st Infantry Division, in North Africa and Italy. At War's end he started several businesses. Danny's Café, The Danzon Club, and Pasadena Transfer Company were a few. He was one of the first Spanish speaking realtors in Pasadena at Santa Fe Realty. His dedication to community service led him to leadership roles in the Knights of Columbus, Pasadena Uni-Vets, Mexican-American Scholarship Committee, Pasadena Little League and many other organizations. After retiring as a Par-Mutual Clerk, he returned to his roots as a rancher in Merced, raising cattle and horses. He eventually returned to Pasadena.
Danny revisited his WWII service sites in Italy, traveled to New Zealand and recently returned to Floresville, Texas for a Castro Family Reunion. There he was honored as the eldest of the Castro Clan. His long and remarkable life brought joy to all who knew him. He will be remembered for his storytelling and great sense of humor.
Precedeed in death by his wife of 67 years, Stella Magdaleno. He is survived by his five children, Daniel Jr., Rebecca, Rudy, Edward, Joseph, several grandchildren and a great grandson. He will be deeply missed by family and friends. Memorial Services: San Gabriel Mission, June 14, 10:30 am.

To have you as a grandfather was one of the greatest blessings I will be forever grateful for. From getting up at 4 am with you on the farm to milk the cows as a young child, to spending time with you flipping through old photos of your past while I listened to your life story just days before your passing, I enjoyed every moment I was able to spend with you. Thanks to you, I have held on to my passion to be civically engaged, work for a better environment and care for animals - these values have shaped who I am and they are why I ended up in Politics today. Most importantly you taught me how to laugh and have a sense of humor about life! I will be eternally grateful for our memories together and for the lessons you have taught me, which I will continue to live out proudly. Though you are gone, our special connection will never fade. Save a seat for me up there Grandpa.

I was so lucky to have Dan Castro for my father-in-law for over 30 years. Lucky describes Dan, because if you were lucky enough to know him, he brought joy and laughter to your life.
Our daughters were lucky to have them for a grandfather who was ever present in their lives, never missing an event from baptisms, parties, school performances to college graduations. He was always the life of the party. Our friends loved you too.
We were so lucky that he was able to travel to the bay area and he out danced everybody at Mia's graduation party!
Lucky for him he died peacefully in his sleep without being ill or having to suffer. What a blessing.
Now Heaven and the angels are lucky to have him. Rest in well-deserved peace, Geyser. I will always feel lucky to have had you in our family's lives, and will cherish every memory of you.
