George Edward Balian
1930 - 2019
September 14, 1930 - February 17, 2019 George Edward Balian, longtime resident of Los Angeles County, passed peacefully into God's loving hands on February 17 at his Altadena home of more than 60 years; his home, for decades, has been known as the "Christmas House" where George initianted the annual grand Christmas display, with more than 10,000 lights and scenery, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world. George was 88 years old. An Army Veteran, avid gardener, orchid grower, classically trained pianist, organist and business innovator, George excelled in every artisic endeavor; he took great pride in his God given talents -- and gave back through his service to the Altadena community each Christmas, and through his organ playing at St. Anne Melkite Catholic Church for more than twenty years. As co-founder and co-owner of the Balian Ice Cream Company, George, along with his Syrian immigrant parents the late Habib and Kalmouni, brothers Alex, Fred, Jack and sister Agnes, kept the family business operating through the 1990's. In his retirement, George enjoyed his home, garden, piano and the many dogs over the years that provided him companionship. Uncle George and the music he brought to the world will be sadly missed. Thank you Mr. Balian for your beautiful home, garden, and great ice cream.

In the late 1970s I was delivered the LA Times in Altadena, and your house on my route. It was a stately area of Altadena. Those lights in the dark were something to behold. Fond memories of slower times.

As a child it was tradition to drive past this house every Christmas season. When you drove up Allen and then made that right hand turn and saw that house all lit up it took your breath away. I brought both of my children there and have pictures of them standing in front of the house. If you grew up in Altadena or Pasadena all you had to say was "The Balian Mansion" and you knew. Thank you for your kindness and your giving back to the community. Even though the last light up was two years ago - every time I go by that house I can imagine it in its glory. Thank you for bringing the spirit of Christmas for the past 50 years. God bless your family.

Will miss the Christmas house as I copy him the best I could for 45 years. Never missed a year to drive up the street and walk around. The old school days will never be the same. Go with God.

HIs Christmas displays brought so much joy to everyone over the years. It wasn't Christmas without going to see the Balian home. But in reading his obituary, I learned that there was so much more to him, so much to be proud of in his long life. My condolences to his family and friends.
