Jack Lorell Obituary

LORELL-Jack Lorell, resident of Pasadena and Altadena for 62 years, passed away on March 13, 2008 at the age of 91. Jack was born on October 7, 1916, in Staten Island, New York. He grew up mostly in California and Brooklyn New York. In the late 1930s, he attended Brooklyn College where he earned his BS and MS in mathematics. He then pursued studies towards a PhD in mathematics at Brown University in Rhode Island. In 1946, Jack started work at the CalTech Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. Jack led a long and distinguished career at JPL, where he was involved in many key space missions, including earth, lunar, Mars, and Venus orbiters and probes, as well as many other unmanned space programs. Jack authored numerous important techni cal papers and articles, and was the editor of the professional journal "Celestial Mechanics." Jack is survived by his wife Doris, his sons Ken and Mark, his daughters-in-law Mary Ann Champagne and Mary Chenoweth Lorell, and his grandsons Kevin, Todd, David, and Daniel. Memorial services were held at the Mount Sinai Memorial Park on Sunday, March 16, 2008. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in honor of Jack to the JNF, UJA, Hadassah, ORT, or B'nai B'rith.
