Stephen Kanter Obituary

Stephen Kanter, M.D. passed away on Wednesday, September 5, 2018. Born on December 24, 1939, in Rhode Island, Dr. Kanter received his B.A., magna cum laude with high honors, from Brown University in 1960 and his M. D. from New York University School of Medicine in1964. He had originally intended to specialize in neurological surgery, but his surgical training was interrupted by a call to military service with the U. S. Navy and the U. S. Marine Corps in the mid-1960's, when he served both in the field and afloat. After military service, he practiced medicine, specializing in diagnostic radiology with expertise in angiography and interventional radiology, as well as more current and innovative imaging technologies. In his over 40 years of practice Dr. Kanter held leadership positions in departments representing the full gamut of practice environments - academic, private practice, health maintenance, and finally, over 20 years with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. Dr. Kanter had a strong personal commitment to non-profit organizations, especially in music and the arts. Over the course of his volunteer career as a self-described "non-profit meddler" he served on the boards of the Armory Center for the Arts, Boston Court Theatre, Coleman Chamber Music Association, the Historical Society of Southern California, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Music Center-Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County, Pacific Asia Museum, and the Pasadena Conservatory of Music, among others. He is survived by his brother, Stanley Kanter of Barrington, Rhode Island. Please sign the guestbook at legacy.com/obituaries/pasadenastarnews.

I am so sorry that we have lost this generous and gentle soul who gave so selflessly of himself to so many organizations. Steve was on the board of several nonprofits where I worked and I treasured his participation, his intelligence and his wit. Requiescat in pace.

When I joined the Zamorano Club Stephen was one of the first members to welcome me into the Club. We always enjoyed a cordial relationship.

I am very sorry to hear about Stephen Kanter's passing. I knew him as a collector of contemporary fine printing, as a former president of the Zamorano Club, and as the endower of the Stephen A. Kanter Lecture on fine printing at the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library, though I know he collected in a number of areas and was very generous with a number of institutions and causes. I also remember his love of music, and spoke with him numerous times at the chamber music concerts at the Clark Library. He will be missed by me, and by many others.

I knew Steve through his activities at the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library at UCLA and the Zamorano Cub. Steve was a generous donor to the Clark, setting up a lecture in his name about fine printing and helping the library in other ways too. He was an ardent collector of books and other objects, and always present at the Clark for its chamber music concerts. Sincere condolences to his brother.

And he was a passionate book collector, enjoying the company of his compadres in the Zamorano Club. He was always known to me as a gentleman. I will always think well of him and I wish to express my sympathy for his family and loved ones. - Jeff

I already miss him at musical performances and arts events all over Pasadena and the greater Los Angeles area. He stood out with his colorful ties and his even more colorful opinions about composers, performances, arts organizations and his deep love for 20th century music which he never missed an opportunity to express. Rest In Peace.
