Dear Mr. Root,
I was so very saddened to learn of Mark's passing. Several things came to mind as I thought of you both. First, how many Madison Elementary field trips we shared. Oh the good ole days! I also thought of the challenges Mark must have faced. My son Trey was diagnosed with cancer when he was just three months old. All of those feelings flooded back to my mind as I read Mark's obituary and your poem. I hope all of the joyous times spent with him offer you and your family support during the upcomings months. May all of the funny times only the two of you shared bring a smile to your heart and on your face.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to your and your family.

Always,
Romanie Arterberry and family

The Life of My Son by Mark R. Root, Sr.

The life of my son began in the spring.
His first squeals of breath, a beautiful thing.

His brightness and smile could not be ignored.
A most pleasant child, loved and adored.

He had some slight stumbles, throughout all his stages,
but kept his composure, like notes on the pages.

He found his life's calling, went forward with verve,
unaware that his dreams, and his future would curve.

When faced with the battle, he had to decide
if he wanted to fight, or just run and hide.

He kept his chin up, and chose the tough road,
and made me quite proud as he weathered the load.

And now, please remember, that's my little boy,
who brought us much laughter, such heart, and great joy.

His love for his brother, his sister, his cousins.
His love for all family and friends by the dozens.

In times when it's tough, his outlook I'll borrow,
and try to see through the tears and the sorrow.

My little Marky, there will be only one.
I will never forget the life of my son.

Mark Was a fantastic young man, he was always there to lend a hand, share a smile or a hug. He was generous with his time and his heart. I will miss him always.
