Betty Schellhase Obituary

Betty Lee Schellhase, a long time resident of Corpus Christi and Pearland, passed away on September 20, 2024, at the age of 96. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Olfert "Buddy" Schellhase in 2016. Betty was born in Kerrville to Street Hamilton and Ruth Mosty Hamilton, both descendants of Kerr County pioneer families, in February of 1928. She graduated from Tivy High School in 1945 and married Buddy in 1948. They moved to Corpus Christi in the 1950's, where he worked as a geologist and she was a homemaker. While in Corpus Christi, Betty earned an Associate of Arts degree from Del Mar College in 1966 that was followed by a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas A&I University Kingsville in 1969, graduating Summa Cum Laude. She obtained her teacher's certificate and taught math at King High School from 1970 until they moved to Pearland in 1992. Betty continued her career by teaching math at Jackson Middle School in Pasadena. After retiring from full time teaching, she was a substitute teacher with Pearland ISD until 2016. Betty's favorite pastimes included reading, gardening, quilting and spoiling several hound dogs.

Betty's survivors include her son Street Schellhase, his wife Lynn Schellhase, grandchildren Erin Thibodeaux Pace and Christopher Schellhase, great grandchildren Joseph Thibodeaux and Ivy Pace, sisters Kate Dalton and Linda Martinets, numerous nieces and nephews, as well as dear friends Frank and Dorothy Burgett. The remains of Betty and Buddy will be interred at Glen Rest Cemetery in Kerrville at a later date.
