Benjamin F. Moore, 90, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026.

Mr. Benjamin F. Moore, 90, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026, in Myrtle Beach,

South Carolina. A devoted father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he leaves

behind a legacy of resilience, intellect, strength, and unwavering love for his family.

Ben was one of six children born to the late Ellison and Mayola Walker Moore. Born and raised

in Gaffney, South Carolina, he graduated from Gaffney High School after skipping two grades

during his years in Cherokee County Schools-an early testament to his remarkable intelligence

and determination.

He continued his education at Benedict College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in

Mathematics and proudly pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He later attended Atlanta

University (now Clark Atlanta University), earning a Master of Arts in Mathematics. His strong

academic background led to him being drafted in the United States military, where he served as

a cryptographer, utilizing his exceptional mathematical abilities.

After completing his studies, Ben began his professional career in Charleston, South Carolina.

Some of his fondest memories were from teaching mathematics at Burke High School and

working at the city library. While teaching in Charleston, he met Willette Johnson, and they

were united in marriage. From this union were born two children, Benjamin "Franklyn" Moore,

Jr., and Benita Ann Moore. Franklyn preceded his father in death. Although Ben and Willette

later divorced, they remained lifelong friends until her passing.

Ben understood the value of education and hard work. During college breaks, he traveled to

Philadelphia to stay with his Aunt Anna Lee. Where he worked stuffing pig's feet in jars to earn

money for tuition, He was determined to build a better future for himself and his family.

He later transitioned from teaching into the emerging field of computer science at a time when

formal computer science degrees did not yet exist. Companies sought mathematics majors to

pioneer computer programming, and Ben embraced this opportunity. His career led the family

to Atlanta, where he worked for Reynolds Aluminum and later Southern Railway (Norfolk

Southern). Programming mainframe computers came naturally to him. He traveled extensively

to study advancing technologies and brought that knowledge back to Norfolk Southern, where

he helped develop the company's computer programming training department. Benjamin

headed this department for many years and was responsible for training and mentoring

numerous employees. He also served as Chairman and Board Member of the Norfolk Southern

Credit Union.

Outside of his professional accomplishments, Benjamin enjoyed a full and active life. He was a

passionate fan of Atlanta Falcons football and Atlanta Braves baseball. He enjoyed skiing and

golfing until his health no longer allowed him to participate. He also loved to travel. He also

enjoyed studying the stock market and was known for his frugality and wise stewardship of his

finances.

Funeral services will be held at Ideal Funeral Parlor, 106 E. Darlington Street, Florence, SC 29506 on Friday, February 27, 2026 at 11:00am and public viewing will be held at 10:00am before the funeral service.
