David Mohn Obituary

SFC David F. Mohn, US Army (Ret.) passed away on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at the KVH Hospital in Ellensburg. The funeral service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 26 at the Liberty Bible Church in Ellensburg. The committal service with military honors will be at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27 at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent. Viewing will be from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Monday, March 25 at Johnston & Williams Funeral Home. Dave was born on August 16, 1953, in Spokane, Washington to David H. and Roberta (Stone) Mohn. He grew up in Connell and graduated from Connell High School in 1972. Roughly a year after graduation, Dave decided to enlist in the United States Air Force and served four years before being discharged. He found out that civilian life wasn't for him, so a few years later he re-enlisted in the United States Army, which proved to be the right fit for him. Dave worked his way up through the ranks quickly before earning his Green Beret and becoming a member of the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), serving with Special Forces for 12 of his 16-year career in the Army. He retired from the Army as a Sergeant First Class in March 2000. Following his "first retirement", Dave took a job with the Washington State Department of Corrections, first as a correctional officer and later as a classification counselor at Clallam Bay Corrections Center, retiring from that job in 2019. Dave was married to Alice Grisham for nearly 20 years and although that marriage later ended in divorce, they were blessed with five children – Joseph, Jacob, James, Frances and Joel. Dave later met Nanette Woodall on Christian Mingle and the two hit it off, marrying on June 28, 2015. They moved to Ellensburg in July 2023 to be closer to family. Dave was an avid collector of guns and knives and had also recently taken up Escrima, a specific form of Filipino martial arts and earned his certification to teach it. He was also very strong in his faith in Jesus Christ. He and Nanette loved attending Liberty Bible Church in Ellensburg where they recently became members. Dave is survived by his wife Nanette Woodall of Ellensburg; children Joseph (Noreen) Mohn of Japan, Jacob (HyunJu) Mohn of Vancouver, WA, James Mohn of Forks, WA, Frances Hawk of Ellensburg and Joel Mohn of Vancouver, WA; step-children Allison (Ted) Sanders of Long Beach, CA, Kristopher (Lauren) Woodall of Houston, TX and Ariana (Brandon) Peters of Salem, OR; as well as 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sandy DuBois and stepson Michael Woodall.
Memorial contributions in Dave's honor are suggested to the Kittitas County Veterans Coalition, 507 N Nanum St Ste 117, Ellensburg, WA 98926. Arrangements have been entrusted to Johnston & Williams of Ellensburg. Online condolences may be left at www.johnston-williams.com
