In Loving Memory of Lucy Hladecek

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, Lucy Hladecek, on December 12, 2023, at the age of 83. Lucy dedicated her life to service, leaving an indelible mark on the lives she touched.

Lucy's journey unfolded with grace and purpose. As a devoted wife to Jim, she spent her early years raising her family in Lake Oswego, Oregon, all the while pursuing higher education and earning her master's degree. Lucy's commitment to education led to her fulfilling career as an educator, and later to Virginia, where she continued her work in teaching and supporting the American Red Cross.

Upon retirement, Lucy and Jim realized their dream by building a home in Port Townsend, WA, where they shared over three decades of cherished memories. Lucy's love for community and service blossomed as she became an integral part of Port Townsend life.

Lucy's involvement could be seen through the CPR courses she taught and as contributing editor for the community bulletin newspaper. Her passion for nature kept her active as a member of the Friends of the Forest Trails (FOFT), where she spent countless hours maintaining Washington state's beloved forest trails, and always offering homemade cookies and coffee to fellow volunteers.

Deeply committed to her faith, Lucy played a vital role in the Grace Lutheran Church community. She served on the Church Council, welcomed worshipers as a Sunday Greeter, and dedicated her time to various roles, including lector, altar guild member, and overseer of communion preparation, even baking and providing gluten-free communion bread. Lucy was a Prayer Angel and an unwavering supporter of Ugandan Orphans, actively engaging with students and providing financial assistance.

Lucy's generosity extended to her local assisted care community, where she lovingly cared for her uncle with joy and devotion until his 100th year. As a mother and grandmother, Lucy was a beacon of love and generosity, leaving behind a legacy of compassion.

Lucy's enduring 58-year love story with James Hladecek is a testament to a lifetime of love. She is survived by her daughter Kristen (Peter), son Joel (Deborah), and four grandchildren. In honoring Lucy's memory, let us cherish the lessons of love, service, and community that she so beautifully embodied throughout her remarkable life. May she rest in eternal peace.
