Michael A. Moss

Michael A. Moss, aged 85, passed away on August 18, 2025, in Sequim, WA. Born on October 23, 1939, Michael's life was marked by his warm, funny personality and a loving nature, alongside a phenomenal memory that made him a much-sought-after teammate in Trivial Pursuit, particularly for his extensive knowledge of sports and cultural details.
Michael graduated from Springfield High School in Ohio and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Ohio University, followed by a Master of Science in Physical Education & Sport History from California State University. His commitment to education was paralleled by a distinguished military career; he served actively in the Navy from 1961 to 1965 and later retired as a Lieutenant Commander from the Naval Reserve.
Professionally, Michael's career was as diverse as it was impactful. From 1965 to 1977, he held various
positions in investment banking and insurance in New York City. He then moved into academia, serving
as Associate Athletic Director at the University of California, Berkeley from 1980 to 1993. His expertise
in sports operations was further recognized when he took on the role of Sports Operations Director for the
1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. He concluded his professional journey at the University of Wisconsin,
Madison, where he served from 1996 until his retirement in 2005 as Associate Athletic Director.
Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Michael was a lover of music, appreciating
everything from jazz and blues/Americana to classical. He was also an avid hiker and camper, and never
missed an opportunity to attend both college and professional sports events.
Michael is survived by his wife, Betty Gordon, and daughters Tania A. Moss and Sonia Moss Jimenez. He
was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo P. Moss and Evelyn Harmon Moss.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no services. Michael's life was one of vibrant engagement with
his passions and profound connections with his loved ones, leaving a lasting legacy that will be cherished
by all who knew him.
