Stephen Ackerman Obituary

Stephen Paul Ackerman passed away unexpectedly in Lewiston, Idaho where he was camping with his wife.

He was born in Watsonville, California on January 13, 1948, the middle child of Mary Virginia and Arthur Paul Ackerman. Steve graduated from Castro Valley High School in California in 1965. After high school he served 4 years in the U.S. Air Force with one year in Vietnam. He graduated from California State College, Stanislaus, in Turlock, California in 1973 with a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting.

Steve held the position of either Controller or Chief Financial Officer for several companies in the Modesto, California area, including Controller for Racor Industries and CFO for Capax Management & Insurance Services. After spending seventeen years with Save Mart Supermarkets as its Controller and then CFO, he retired in 2012 and he and his wife Maria moved to Sequim, Washington.

Steve was a man of many passions. He loved fast cars! He was a devoted NASCAR, Formula 1 and Top Fuel Drag Racing fan. He and Maria and friends attended many races throughout the States. He also loved restoring cars. His last project was a 1972 Bronco.

He loved Sequim and all that it had to offer - fishing, camping, crabbing, clamming. He was a proud member of the Puget Sound Anglers North Olympic Peninsula Chapter where he served as the treasurer since 2017. He also loved making chocolate chip cookies and was pretty proud of his sourdough bread. He loved his life-long friends along with new friends he made since moving to Sequim.

He is survived by his beloved wife Maria of 55 years; his beloved daughter, Erica Ackerman, and beloved son, Brian Ackerman; his sister Susan and brother-in-law Dennis Devereux, and his brother, Kenneth Ackerman. He is also survived by his two aunts, Patricia Ackerman of Sequim, Washington, and Sue Ann Ackerman of Boise, Idaho, as well as several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and numerous Ackerman cousins, some of whom he had just visited in Boise during his last camping trip. He loved them all!

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary Virginia and Arthur Paul Ackerman.

His memorial mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church at 11 o'clock, with a reception to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to a Saint Vincent de Paul, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim, WA 98382.

Stephen and Maria have been wonderful and supportive family for the Modesto Ackerman clan. Stephen lent his mentorship when we were starting our own business and Maria and Erica opened their homes to us when it was easy to feel isolated. Stephen will be remembered with joy and deeply missed. Love to them all.

Maria, Erika, Brian I enjoyed my time and memories with Steve. He was like my work dad and I appreciated his support and counsel always. I loved his passion for fast cars and good food. I recall we drive in his beloved Mustang to Sac for meeting and he made sure we ate at restaurant featured on Diners, Dives and Drive ins.. it was so fun! I have missed you all but grateful for FB posts. So happy that he found his special retreat in Sequim. God Bless and hugs from the Rockwell Family.
