Doctor Pickens Obituary

DOCTOR JAMES CONLEE PICKENS

1937 - 2013

Pensacola Pediatrician, James Conlee Pickens, M.D., died on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at West Florida Hospital. He is preceded in death by his father, Malcolm J. Pickens, and his mother, Hester Conlee Pickens. Conlee was born April 17th, 1937 in Decatur, Alabama. His family moved to New Orleans and Norco, Louisiana and returned to Decatur in 1953. He was graduated from Decatur High School in 1955 and Howard College, now Samford University, in 1958 with a B.S. Degree. Conlee was graduated from the University of Alabama Medical School in 1962 and completed internship as Chief Resident of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve during the Viet Nam Conflict and was on active duty at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Key West, Florida from 1965 to 1967.

Dr. Pickens began his pediatric practice in 1967 at the Medical Center Clinic, Pensacola, Florida, where he practiced faithfully for almost 40 years. In the latter years his declining health limited his practice to behavioral pediatrics and in 2008 he retired. He loved all aspects of general pediatrics and continued his special love of behavioral pediatrics on a limited basis with the Florida Department of Children Services. He worked a great deal with children with Attention Deficit Disorder. He served on the staff of Escambia General Hospital, Baptist Hospital, Sacred Heart Hospital and West Florida Hospital during his practice. He also served as an adjunct Professor at Pensacola Christian College.

Conlee and his family became very active in First Baptist Church of Pensacola when they first arrived. In addition to regular attendance, he taught adult Sunday School and other Bible classes. He particularly loved the study of the Old Testament and was quite a Biblical scholar. He enjoyed Christian music, hymns and especially The Halleluiah Chorus from Handel's Messiah and Widor's Organ Toccata from the Fifth Organ Symphony in F, Op 42 #1 .

He was an avid golfer through 1978 at Pensacola Country Club but became an even more avid bass fisherman. He was a member of the Pensacola Bass Club for many years and later his membership included the Five Flags Bass Club. He enjoyed fishing with his wife Pat, his son Colonel Patton Keith Pickens and just about anyone that could hold a rod and spin a reel. Conlee and his dear friend, John Register enjoyed two great fishing days the week prior to his hospitalization.

His reading included a variety of subjects, but he was especially fond of World War II history. He followed local, state and national politics and was an ardent Alabama football fan having been born in Alabama and his two children attending the University.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia Pettey Pickens; a daughter, Elizabeth Dean Pickens; a son, Colonel Patton Keith Pickens and his wife Paula; and two grandchildren. His sister, Maxie Dean Pickens Carwile, and her husband, Billie Dean Carwile, of Decatur, Alabama also survive him.

Conlee became a Christian at a young age and was familiar with the ways of Christ not only because of his own faith but also that of his parents. His father was called by the Lord to Preach the Gospel and his mother was Dietician for the New Orleans Baptist Seminary. Throughout his life he led by example and was a witness to all through his actions and deeds. "His Lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord" Matthew 25:21.

Pallbearers are, George Forsberg, Darryl White, Al Smith, Jim Prim, Larry Bullock, Gary Gilmore and Ronnie Bridges. Honorary Pallbearers are, John Register, Eugene Langston, Don James, Bill Ranson, Tom Fife, Jack Phillips, James Iv, Bill McArthur, Gerald McArthur, Lamar Cobb and Bill Farinas.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan Hands Ministry of First Baptist Church of Pensacola, 500 North Palafox Street, Pensacola, FL 32501.

The family will receive friends in Pleitz Chapel at First Baptist Church, 500 North Palafox Street on Wednesday, February 20th, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 21st in the First Baptist Church Sanctuary at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow at Bayview Memorial Park. Dear Mrs. Pickens and Beth, I am so very sorry for your loss. I know what a great man your husband and father was. He will always be remembered for not only being a great doctor, husband, and father but for being a great man of God. May the Lord comfort you and send you peace. May God also continue to bless you with the knowledge that one day you will be reunited with again. With love in Christ, Marty Hickman.

As many have already posted, I too was a patient of Dr. Pickens all through childhood as well as my other siblings. In turn when I had my children, Dr. Pickens was still the choice for me. He treated all my boys through their years growing up and his knowledge and experience of pediatric medicine was appreciated and made him an invaluable member of the medical community in this area for a long time. He will be missed by his family but also the multitude of those who utilized his services through the Medical Center Clinic. I like to say in closing here that one of the first and lasting memories of his office was the gigantic aquarium he kept! It was also one of my boys favorite memories as well. Children need good memories of the doctors office, as well as the gum he gave them for "good office behavior", and I think he strove to see that is exactly what they thought. On behalf my late father H.O Bozeman,Sr and my mother Rochelle Bozeman, and my husband Paul Brown, boys, Michael, Joshua, Jonathan, Timothy and myself Becky....Thank you for your service and thank you to their family for supporting & allowing him to serve in this fine capacity. It will not be forgotten!

Pat and Beth,

My respect for you two and Conlee has always been great. I know that he had a wonderful life and helped so many people with his love and medical education. He will be missed, but know that he is in a wonderful place. I am sorry that I never had the chance to fish with him, but always enjoyed hearing about his successes on the rivers and lakes. My love to you both.

After reading the obituary, I realize that I was one of Dr. Pickens first patients, possibly. My mother began taking me to him in 1967 in Pensacola. He continued to be my Dr. for many years. I remember him as an extremely kind and gentle man, always ready to explain his diagnosis. He never seemed to be in a hurry, like so many today. Condolences to his family, he will be missed.

Dr. Pickens was my children's pediatrician back in the 80s. What I loved most about him was his good common sense approach to caring for children. He never seemed too busy to spend a few minutes more answering questions, calming nerves, genuinely loving on my children. It has been many years, but I have never forgotten this sweet man and his gentle ways. I will keep you in my prayers.

Dr Pickens was my husbands Dr, then my sons Dr until he retired from General Pediatrics. When my son was 7 mths old, he was running a high fever, etc. Dr Pickens saw us in the ofc, gave instruction and we went hm. The next day before I could call and give him a report, he called me!!! I had never nor has it happened since, had a physician call me. He has been this family's physician since the late '60's, but will be in our hearts forever. Thank you Dr Pickens, we love you. Many condolences to the family and we will be praying for solace and peace for yr family thru this time.

We were so blessed to have Dr. Pickens as our children's pediatrician, and even later to have him as dr. for our first grandson. I always told everyone that he was the very best pediatrician. He took care of children as they should be, and was there for the parents as well. I will always be grateful to him in so many ways. Rest in peace Dr. Pickens. Prayers and condolences to the family. He will be missed.

When I moved with my family to Pensacola in the '70's I was told that the pediatrician I needed to see was Dr. Pickens. What great advice that was, too. We loved Dr. Pickens and will always be thankful to him. My sympathy goes out to his family at this very sad time.

PAT AND FAMILY,

WE ARE SADDENED TO HEAR OF CONLEE'S DEATH. WE REJOICE WITH YOU FOR HIS LIFE AND THAT HE IS NOW IN HEAVEN. HE WAS SUCH A DYNAMIC FORCE AT FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH AND A LOVING, CARING, CAPABLE DOCTOR. AS A MOTHER OF AN ADD CHILD AND A TEACHER, I APPRECIATE ALL HE DID TO HELP PARENTS AND TEACHERS UNDERSTAND THE BEHAVIORS OF CHILDREN WHO WERE A LITTLE DIFFERENT. MAY GOD GRANT YOU THE PEACE AND UNDERSTANDING THAT ONLY HE CAN GIVE. YOU ARE IN OUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS IN THE DAYS AHEAD.

MUCH LOVE
