Fred Ratchford Obituary

Fred Thomas "Tommy" Ratchford, Jr

Pensacola - Fred Thomas "Tommy" Ratchford Jr., a longtime Pensacola attorney and rock 'n' roll band leader since he was a teenager, died Sunday, June 3, 2018, from complications due to COPD. He was 69.

Ratchford retired from law practice May 31 and missed a gala retirement party set June 1 due to his hospitalization, so his family and friends will gather soon to celebrate. Plans for that event, as well as a traditional memorial service, will be announced viawww.ratchfords.us.

Born Oct. 31, 1948, in California, Ratchford was known by many Escambia County residents as lead singer and keyboard player for Gallery Night trio, The Song Byrds, with friends Jeff and Andree Byrd. Across the decades, he was a leading member of such local rock 'n' roll bands as Xenos, Soul-7, Laymen, George Emmanuel Trio and Six T's. He also was founder of The Pensacola Super Band, which performed at opening weekends for Pensacola Beach Bands on The Beach.

Until his health declined, Ratchford was a regular on Blab TV's "Justice for All" show focusing on legal issues. He was a member of the Florida Bar Association, a Mason, and active with the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Ratchford, an avid writer, said this about his life: "I consider myself a lucky guy - I've got a great wife that I love dearly, a lot of good friends both inside and out of the law profession, and I'm going out on top while I'm still perceived as the best in my field. Who could ask for more?"

He is survived by his wife, Suzy Brumfield Ratchford of Pensacola; a daughter, Amanda Ratchford Cherry (Andrew) and grandson Michael Thomas Andrew Cherry of Seattle, Wash.; his mother, Ruth McGuffee Ratchford (Ran Humphreys) of Pensacola; sister, Martha Ruth Ratchford (William Tucker) of Fernandina Beach, Fla; and step-son David Ray of McComb, Miss.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he was preceded in death by his father, Fred Thomas Ratchford.

Ratchford was a graduate of Escambia High School in 1967, the University of Mississippi and Florida State University Law School.

The Ratchfords came to Pensacola in the 1950s when his father was stationed in the U.S. Navy. They moved around for a while, spending parts of his childhood in Cairo, Egypt and Guam, then returned to Pensacola in July 1964 when three bands - The Embers, The Scepters and The Contours - set the standard for local dance music, Ratchford wrote about the scene. "I became part of my first band in November of that year. It was called The Xenos." he wrote. "It was truly what you would call a garage band."

Friends often gathered at the Ratchfords' Warrington home, where he'd added a music room complete with stage, sound equipment and lighting, decorated with photographs from his many band performances. Music from those many parties could be heard throughout the neighborhood on weekend nights.

In a recent note to Ratchford about his retirement, Judge Jan Shackelford told him, "Not only did you set the standard for DUI defense for many years, but you were always gracious about sharing your experience and knowledge with others. You made a difference in this community and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to litigate with you."

Ratchford will be cremated with Trahan Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial donations be made to Pensacola Humane Society, Escambia County Wildlife Rescue or The Leaning Post Ranch.

So sad to hear of your loss. Tommy was a really nice man. I met him doing theatre at PLT. We sang a duet in LIES and LEDGENDS the musical stories of Harry Chapin. It was directed by Ramona Hicks who we lost several years ago. I miss both of them greatly. Tommy was so generous with his time and helped two of my children out of messy situations. The world has suffered a great loss. I pray for hi daughter Amanda and all the rest of his family, friends and loved ones.

Thank you, TR, for singing a Perry Como song (And I Love You So) - what was I thinking?? at my wedding a very long time ago. The best version of the song "ANNA" ever - you sang and recorded on a 45, which I cherished for a long time ~ wish I still had it. Enjoy your peaceful new home and never stop singing, my friend- you have so much to share up there!

Tommy was one of my dearest friends. When he was in Santa Rosa County, he always made it a point to stop by and visit with me and Judge Nichols and, later, Judge Hilliard. Tommy was truly loved by so many people in all walks of life. Suzie, my heart breaks for you. Tommy left this world a better place and I'm sure, he was welcomed into Heaven. I will always miss my dear friend, Tommy.

Tommy was all the best of those High School years! Happy, fun loving and a great musician and singer-always up for a 'gig' to entertain. Memories of him included filming our own local version of the Beatles movie 'Help'-what fun with that Navy Point group of kids. The fun just continues as Tommy grabbed ' St. Peter' as heaven opened it's doors for Tommy's reception. God bless Tommy Ratchford.

Dear Tommy, From the time you were 11, headed to Camp on the Warrington Baptist Church Bus, and calling the wind "Mariah!", GOD heard you sing! With your unique, but always entertaining, sense of humor sharing the day's discoveries with those trying to have lunch on the breezeway during our Anatomy & Physiology Class! YOU weren't the life of the party, YOU WERE THE PARTY! I'm sure that the late, great, James Brown was awaiting your arrival at the Pearly Gates...just to get the jam session on! You were the best of all of us! May your memory be eternal in God's Book as it will be in the hearts of all of us who were graced with your presence....and may your family be comforted by the sweetest of shared memories as you pass from their arms to GODs!.....Peace, Light, and Loving-Kindness, Jane Carden McMurray '67

We received sad news of Tommy's passing while traveling in South Florida, we knew he had not been doing well and had him in our prayers. Our sympathy, love, prayers and memories to Suzy, Amanda, Ruthie and Ran, Martha and Tucker, other family and friends. May God be with you all at this time. Our paths crossed quite a bit over the years, both coming to Pensacola in the early 50's with our families. Tommy and I were 3 months apart and were both full of ourselves, loving life and living it to its fullest. We grew up together with our families at Warrington Baptist Church and lived in the Warrington/Navy Point area. We both became involved with music at a very early age, in junior high school, I think. We got away for a while with college, military , etc, but came back to Pensacola to settle down, marry and raise a family and continue our love of music. It would take a book to describe Tommy Ratchford, the things we did and pulled off over the years. Every time we met around town, we would discuss and story tell a bit about past and present, always parting with a shake, hug and smiles. Over the years, I have called Tommy to talk, sometimes just to say hi and see how he was doing, or to get some friendly, honest advise. He always was busy but returned my call cheerfully. He was there when you needed some legal advise and if he didn't have the answer, he knew where to get it. The song you have a friend, certainly referred to Tommy, because if you knew Tommy and he knew you, you had a friend. Tommy was a people person, he not only liked people, but they liked him. I think it would be safe to say Tommy was a legend in his own time. He is one to be in the who's who book of the South. We could put a lot of labels on Tommy of who he was, what he did and the full life he completed. What I would say of him, so graciously is FRIEND. If you have but one friend in life, you are rich beyond dreams. Tommy Ratchford had many, many friends, he was a rich man indeed. He will be missed by family and friends, but the memories will forever remain. We who know the truth and the light, will see him again. Fair weather, smooth seas and keep the music sweet, till we meet again my friend. Jake Knight

rock star

sing a song of life tommy
sing a song of love
sing a song of relief
from high above

a song of giving
a song of bearing
the problems of others
and always caring

never the judge
never the jury
always the listener
always in a hurry

to lead the rescue
to spend night and day
defending so many
who lost their way

a friend of yours
would never find
himself abandoned
by the king of kind

you gave heart and song
your whole life thru
now angels all 'round
are singing to you...

and june third was not
the day the music stopped
it was the day in heaven
the champagne popped

but the angels must wait
with open hands
at your welcome party
because God commands:

bring the rock star to me
i've a job for him to do
this may be heaven...
but we have drinkers here too!

God Bless you Tommy.
I enjoyed being in the musicals with you at Pensacola Little Theatre and PJC.
I'll always smile at the memory of you being dragged across the stage, imitating a floating body in "Big River", Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol", singing and dancing around in "1940 Radio Canteen" and many others. We had a blast and a lot of laughs. Looks like you went too soon and will be missed. Thanks for sharing the journey and the friendship. Rest in Peace my friend. Mitzi Presley Holt
