John Eugene (Gene) Christopher January 26, 1957 - April 4, 2014

Gene passed away after a short illness on April 4, 2014 in Anderson, SC. Gene was a wonderful, caring soul who always did things his way. Gene lived most of his life in Pensacola, Florida but had resided in Fairplay, SC the past few years. He loved to dance, listen to Reggae music, talk politics and drink his beer. He always had a kind word for others and plenty of free advice he would give you even if you did not want the advice.

Gene was a HVAC technician most of his life but held a variety of jobs including bartender, shrimp boat driver, crew boat deckhand. He had many good friends throughout his life including his best friend Dick Blanchard who was more like a brother than a friend. Although we will miss him, we thank God for the time He allowed us to be together.

Gene, thanks for all the crazy times, the laughs and the great memories. Be at peace my friend and know I will still pick up the phone to call you out of habit when I am traveling. As we always said at the end of our phone calls "love you brother".

Gene was preceded in death by his mother Blanche Christopher, sister Peggy Christopher, and brother Randy Christopher. Gene is survived by his soul mate Judy Appelberg, son Sean Appelberg, sister Sharon, brother Scott, a special niece Susan and many family members.

Gene did not wish to have a funeral service and was cremated. A memorial service in his honor will be held Saturday June 28, 2014 at Dick and Debbie Blanchard's house in Pensacola, Florida from 2 -5 PM. Please join us in remembering my friend Gene by stopping by for a visit and sharing of stories. Gene requested that beach attire be worn for his memorial service. I am sad to see you go Gene. We had a few adventures of our own from when you lived across the street from me at Sanders Beach to me you and Dick during our surfing days to your time as my deckhand on a tug. Safe journey my friend & you will be in my thoughts & prayers. Good Bless!

RIP my longtime friend, we have known each other since we were 12 years old through School, Sanders Beach and of course Pcola Beach. Surf's up where you are my friend.

Gene never met a stranger. Everyone he met were invited to his home to eat! What I most admired was his love of animals and nature. Stray animals all had names from "Cuss" (cat under the swing set) to "Bruster" his guard rooster. I sorely miss calling and hearing his advice and as he handed Judy the phone saying "I love you". Rest in Peace my dear Brother-in-Law! I love you!
