I got to know Captain Englehart when his son Mike and I were buddies in the 9th grade. He told me about his Dad's plan to open up a WATERSLIDE (!!) I was ALL over that. Took my Red Cross lifeguard class, and helped out (minimally) with the prep and sodding of the big hill. When it opened, rules were few, and fun was overflowing. There were 10-15 lifeguards, and Mr. Englehart was ALWAYS there, convincing everyone that we needed to stay open, even though there were ominous clouds every afternoon. He would say "I'm a meteorologist!" "It's OK!" So one time I was at the top of the hill, and the rain started. Then the thunder. Then the lightning. I'm standing up there, feet in the water, it's 1 PM and DARK, with lightning bolts so bright they left a blinking light behind your eyelids. I asked a 12 yr-old slider to go down and talk to "Mr. E. " and see if I could leave the hill (We were NEVER to leave the hill unattended.) He said "Don't worry unless you see the lightning and hear the thunder at the SAME TIME." That's what being 15 and trusting will do to you.

I sure liked the way he would share his stories with ... those pauses...right...when...you...didn't expect them, and tell us all how Donna needed more walls for her artwork collection. (The huge house had walls everywhere.)
That was the BEST summer of my life. Thank you for the advice to get the mirrored sunglasses, Mr. E!

I always considered Harry to be the "Greatest Uncle To Have Ever Lived", with apologies to all my other uncles who were great.

But even the other Uncles would agree, Harry was the greatest.

As kids back in Akron we would be thrilled when we heard Harry was coming to visit. He was our hero, our idol.

He was funny, he was a leader, he made over 350 carrier landings (50 at night), he taught me how to gig flounders, he was always the best looking guy in the group, he was a man's man.

To my cousins Terri, Jeff, Andy, Mike and Amy go my heartfelt condolences. Your Dad loved the Lord, read 1st Corinthians 2:9 for added solace.

We were blessed to have had the privilege of knowing Captain Harry J. Englehart. Even though we only knew him for a short twelve years, we grew to be very fond of Harry. You just knew that Harry had a love for God and a strong and special love for his family. Harry was a kind and giving man, he will be missed dearly. The saying is true, ‘Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same again. Captain “Harry J. Englehart was that kind of man. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the Englehart family.

With our deepest sympathy,
Steve, Peggy, Shannon and Danielle Kimball
