This message is a little late as I happened to find out of John's passing while searching my old school and area in VA. Beach. I left the East coast many years ago.
I was fortunate to be a student of this great man in 7th grade while living in VA. Beach and attending Trantwood Elem in the mid 70s. He provided a positive impact in my life at a time when I really needed a male role model. We immediately clicked and bonded over our mutual love of soccer. He even took a group of us in class to see the NY Cosmos play in DC. I was not the best student but he had a way of teaching that kept me and other students eager to learn. I believe he was the first male teacher I had in the public school system.
It does provide a bit of comfort to see he was able to enjoy at least some retirement years. God bless his surviving family members, may he rest in peace.
