Jose Montes Obituary
1935-2017
Jose Montes, 81, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday, February 19, 2017 in Pensacola, Florida.
He was born November 26, 1935 to Luis and Gaspara Montes in Manila, Philippines, one of eleven siblings. He received his medical degree from Far Eastern University Medical School, Manila, Philippines. On November 7, 1964, he married Lelia Mendoza, M.D. and had two daughters, Mylene and Melissa. They immigrated to the United States and lived in St. Louis, MO where he finished his psychiatric residency at Barnes Hospital, Washington University. They moved to Pensacola, FL where he established his private practice in 1979, and worked until his retirement in 2015.
Survivors include his wife, Lelia, his two daughters, Mylene Montes (Darrin) of Washington, DC and Dr. Melissa Montes (Eric) of NJ; four grandchildren: Alexander, Tristan, Thatcher and Scarlett; two brothers, three sisters, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, godchildren and countless friends. His parents, three brothers, and two sisters preceded him in death.
Dr. Jose Montes was a man who always made people laugh. He made everyone around him happy. He was known by all for his infallible sense of humor, warmth, intelligence, and innate kindness. He was a compassionate psychiatrist, who loved helping his patients. He worked and sacrificed selflessly for his family throughout his entire life. He was a dedicated friend to so many, and the most thoughtful, gentle, loving husband, father and grandfather. He was the heart of his family. He will be missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, February 24 with a family viewing from 4:00 until 5:00 p.m. and a wake open to friends and family from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Faith Chapel Funeral Home, 100 Beverly Parkway, Pensacola, FL 32505. Funeral services will be held at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 1212 E. Moreno St. (corner of 12th Ave & E. Moreno) Pensacola, FL 32503 on Saturday, February 25 at 10a.m., followed by a burial at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1300 E. Hayes St. Pensacola, FL 32503. Honorary Pallbearers will consist of members from the Association of Philippine Physicians of the Florida Panhandle.

I remember him with great love and fondness. Always have a ready joke to tell. Great sense of humor. . Delight of amy party or gatherings. He was also kind and generous. Trip to Mediterranean in cruise with the APPFP was one joyous memory.
His death although peaceful shook our hearts and left a void that only Jose can fill. He will be remembered and cherished.

I am truly grateful to have worked with and been his friend. I regret my inability to see him prior to his death and just informed of his death last night by a mutual colleague and friend. Dr. Jose Montes loved music, loved to dance and specifically wanted the song "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps", played at Melissa's wedding. Jose and Lelia would glide effortlessly across the dance floor as they danced at the many dances they asked me to play for, including with the Main Street Band for the Association of Philippine Physicians Inaugural Ball and for Ballroom Dancing as Red Lane's drummer. Dr. Montes loved life, loved music and he & Lelia always on the dance floor.
