Martin Barnard Obituary

Martin J. (Barney) Barnard - Col. USAF Retired

5 Nov 1926-2 Jan 2017

Col. Barnard, born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jeannette Allen also from Little Rock, daughter Penelope Vetrosky of Pensacola, son Jay Barnard of Derby, Kansas. Also surviving are his two younger brothers William Barnard of Atlanta, Georgia and Lewis Barnard of Richardson, Texas.

He was one of the few remaining veterans of WWII, Korean and Vietnam Wars. At age 16 he enlisted in the Navy and served his time in the Pacific during WWII. Following WWII and after completing two years of college, was accepted for pilot training at Randolph Field, Texas and flew in the Korean War. Afterwards, sent by the USAF to University of Oklahoma, he graduated in 1961 with a degree of BBA. He then went to Vietnam, flew reconnaissance and commanded and led two squadrons, leading to honors and praises for himself and the USAF.

The Col. was a distinguished aviator and patriot (33 years in service of his country). His accomplishments and missions along with decorations included two Silver Stars, three Distinguished Flying Crosses and others too numerous to list. He was a loving husband and father and will forever be in our hearts. We miss him.

Martin "Barney" Barnard was strict, but a totally honest and immensely capable pilot.
The time that I was privileged to spend with him during a memorable flight all over South America was without a doubt a highlight in my life.
He taught me a lot. I have no doubt that he contributed to my career of over 22.000 flying hours without any accident.
He was a great companion.
Martin, may you rest in Peace. You were one of the best of the best.

I had the privilege of doing a flight with "Barney" through South America and subsequent delivery to Amsterdam in 1981 in a Cessna Citation.
The best flight I ever had, with the best pilot.
We became good friends and corresponded regularly.
We lost contact, we both changed our addresses a few times. I now live in Ireland.
But I will never forget the glorious time with Barney.
The World's Greatest Fighter Pilot ! May you rest in peace ! Or better, fly high and '.. touch the Face of God!'

Best squadron commander/Director of Operations I ever had! Communicated very clearly!

My squadron commander with the 12TRS in SEA in early 1969. He was the consummate fighter pilot. One of his favorite sayings was , "Any airplane with more than one seat and one engine was a training aid." Quite a guy!! Condolences to his family.

Dear family of Col. 'Barney' Barnard, I send my sincerest and deepest sympathy to you all. Col. Barnard demanded very much from his troops, but the result was not a single flight crew member or aircraft was lost during his command of our squadron in Vietnam. He was highly respected in all he did as I am sure you can appreciate as his family members. May time heal your sadness created by his absence and your memories of him be wonderful forever. Col. Barnard RIP. Glynn
