Michael Redmond Obituary

Michael R. Redmond, M.D.

1943 - 2011

Dr. Michael R. Redmond, age 68 of Milton, FL passed away on Monday, June 20, 2011 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Michael Redmond was the oldest of five children raised by their parents, Ralph and Katherine Redmond. Dr. Redmond served in the United States Army from 1969 thru 1971 as a General Medical Officer at Leonard Wood Army Hospital and served in the Vietnam Conflict in the 25th Infantry Division; Medical Company Commander, Third Field Hospital in which he was awarded two Bronze Stars.

Dr. Redmond demonstrated unusual principal and leadership qualities throughout his life. He had a positive influence on all who knew and worked with him and was a fully committed member of each class and organization to which he belonged. He was destined to become an M.D. and his dedication to that goal was never compromised for an instant. Dr. Redmond graduated fourth in his class at Campion Jesuit High School, a college prep boarding school; he was Class President for four consecutive years, attained the highest rank of ROTC Battalion Commander as Lt. Colonel, and was voted "Knight of the Year" by his comrades. Mike's excellence as a student, and as a person, allowed him access to Medical School after only three years at St. Louis University, an achievement most unusual for the time. He graduated in four years from St. Louis University Medical School. His internship was at St. Louis University Hospital Group; his residency was at St. Louis University Hospital Group (Ophthalmology) and his Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus fellowship was at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic, Iowa City, Iowa, 1974 thru 1975.

Dr. Redmond had his practice at West Florida Medical Center, Department of Ophthalmology in which he was Chief Executive Officer from 2000 until present. He received AMA Physicians Recognition Award from 1975 thru 2000. Dr. Redmond was a member of The American Academy of Ophthalmology; Board of Trustees, 1992 thru 2004, was President Elect, 2002; President, 2003 and served on the council from 1987 thru 1995. He was a member of The American Academy of Pediatrics: Fellow 1978 to present Liaison, American Academy of Ophthalmology 1999 - 2005 and Liaison AAPOS 2010. He served on The Escambia County Medical Society: Secretary Treasurer 1982, Vice President, 1983, Pres. Elect, 1984, President, 1985. He served as a Delegate for the Florida Medical Association, 1982-1989, 1991, 1992, 1995, 2002 to present and served on the Escambia County School Health Advisory Committee, 1981 to present, was Chairman, 1983-1986, 1990-1995, 1997-2008. Dr. Redmond received the FMA's highest award, the Certificate of Merit, on March 14, 2011, for his exceptional and outstanding service to the association, to the medical profession, and to the public.

The most rewarding aspect of his work has been "helping kids see" Dr. Redmond said, "If you take a 70 year old and give that person better sight for ten years, that's a good thing; if you take a five year old and give that child 80 years of vision, I think you've done something extra.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Katherine Redmond and his brother, Steve Redmond.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Stewart Redmond; two daughters, Anne Warren and Sandra Patterson (Carlos Colon); granddaughter, Sarah Warren and her father, Terry Warren; two brothers, John Redmond (Marie) and Jim Redmond; one sister, Marcia Starr (Dennis); aunt, Maxine Redmond; mother-in-law, Lois Stewart; sister-in-law, Dianne Turner; numerous nieces, nephews; a special cousin, Tom Redmond (Diane) and many friends.

It hurts my heart to find that Dr. Redmond passed. I saw him for the first time in 1976 when I was only 4 days old. Dr. Redmond saw me through multiple surgeries and I continued to see him every year until I was 23 years old when he finally had to tell me it was time to move on to an "adult" ophthalmologist. I knew I was past the age of seeing him, and as I told him that day: "Well Dr. Redmond, I knew this day would come but I had zero plans to leave you until you forced me to."
Even when I was a small child, I always looked forward to my annual visit. He was so kind and made me feel completely comfortable (plus I loved his cymbal clapping monkey!).
Those of us who were fortunate enough to be his patients were truly blessed with one of the very best.

Mike Redmond was one of the finest and most caring physicians with whom I have ever had the privilege of working. He and I, along with several others, began our practice together in 1975 in Pensacola. Mike was always a gentleman and a pleasure to work with. I still think of him often. Cheers, Rick Ciordia

In loving memory of a wonderful person as well as a very dedicated and loving doctor to our son, Kyle Farris, who has a very rare syndrome known as Lowes Syndrome.
As I read Dr Michael Redmond's obituary it does make me very sad and yet so very proud, too. I know he was loved by so many and I'm so VERY thankful that he was my son's pediatric opthamologist for the first few years of his life.
I only learned about Dr Redmond's passing earlier this year. Needless to say we were very saddened to hear this.
How blessed we were to have Dr. Redmond care for our son from birth to the age of 4... prior to us being transferred to Jacksonville, Florida. He actually saw Kyle at the age of 2 days old. We give Dr. Redmond all the credit for the wonderful vision that Kyle has today.
We actually took a vacation going to Pensacola and Biloxi a few years prior to Dr Redmonds passing and stopped at the hospital in hopes of his being there. HE WAS and How wonderful it was to see him at his office and have him meet Kyle as a young man. I'm so thankful we had that opportunity to see him, if only for a few moments, and to also thank him again for all he has done for Kyle. He was very pleased to know that Kyle was doing so well. That is a wonderful memory I often reflect on. A very sweet memory that I'm so glad to have.

I would like to share with the family that Dr. Michael Redmond performed bilateral congenital cataract surgery on Kyle at two and four weeks of age and fitted him for contacts at 6 weeks of age. I distinctly remember like it was yesterday at being very scared and nervous for our newborn son to have eye surgery at such a young age. After Dr Redmond spoke with us regarding Kyle's treatment plan assuring me that all would be fine. I knew without a doubt that he was in the BEST care possible. WE WERE SO RIGHT AND SO VERY BLESSED as so many other children were. Cataract surgery was a success, Kyle was in contacts at 6 weeks of age and today at 33 he has great vision. Unfortunately many boys don't. Also through Dr. Redmond I was able to make contact with and become the best of friends with another parent of a child with Lowe's Syndrome, Mrs Peggy Williams. Her son was a few years older than Kyle. Peggy was the first parent I had ever met who had a child with Lowes. Once again another blessing in our lives..one I am very thankful for as well.

We will always be indebted and so very very thankful to Dr. Michael Redmond and his loving and supportive family. He will be sorely missed by so many who knew and loved him.

Our love, our thoughts and our prayers continue to be with the family. God Bless you today and always. ❤

I was looking for Dr. Redmond's contact information today and learned of his passing. I began seeing Dr. Redmond when I was 2 or 3 yeears old, and he performed 3 or 4 operations on my eyes to correct strabismus. Because of his work on me, I was able to join the US Air Force, and just retired after 20 years of service. That career, meeting the mother of my children, and many other experiences I enjoyed would not have been possible without him.

My sincerest condolences to his family. It is apparent that Dr. Redmond touched many, many lives, and is thought of with great fondness and respect. He seemed like a superhero to me when I was a boy, and I am grateful that he was such an important part of my life.

Deepest Respect and Sympathies,

A special person God put here that Mother's trusted there children with. Thank you for all your kindness, care and reasurrance to our little daughter all those yrs ago, who is now 14. God Bless your family and many prayers.

I was looking online to look up Dr. Redmond's number so I could see if he could perform another surgery on my sons left eye since he corrected his right eye from 1-5 years old. He is now 14 years old and I must say my breath feels like it had been taken away. We traveled back here in hopes of seeing him, but our Heavenly Father had a much better plan. We love you Dr. Redmond, and we still pray the same prayer as before, that God sends someone heaven sent into our lives that was as caring as your were...

I am just now finding out about Dr. Redmond's passing. I am truly sorry for the family's loss. I started seeing Dr. Redmond when I was 2 years old. He discovered my eye condition as strabismus and put me in my first pair of teeny tiny glasses that my mother still has to this day. I remember being so excited to be able to see! From then on I saw Dr. Redmond every year for my eye exam. He was always very gentle and kind. At the age of 15 I finally got the exciting news that I could wear contacts, I had been wishing for this day for a long time! I continued to see Dr. Redmond after I graduated from high school and until my son was born. I am 28 years old and am so blessed to have had such a wonderful doctor to make a huge impact on my vision! He will be missed by many.

I found out today about Dr. Redmond's passing. I am so sorry. I grew up in his waiting room, and in fact, continued to see Dr. Redmond well into adulthood, because he knew my eyes better than anyone else, and he felt like a member of my family.
He was unfailing kind and gentle with me, always apologizing in his soft voice if something he had to do would hurt me. I remember that he always wore ties with cartoon characters on them, and whenever he had to take me across the hall to see another eye specialist - a frequent ocurrence due to my poor vision - he would always take me by the hand and walk with me to the other doctor's office.

I will miss him and will always be grateful for his skill, compassion and gentleness. I hope I told him how much I appreciated him on my last visit. I don't remember what we said on that last day, but I do remember he held my hand and walked me to the elevator...just like always.

Mrs. Redmond: I found out this evening at St. Rose of Lima's Memorial Mass that Dr. Redmond had passed away. He was the first eye doctor for me and my little brother. That was many years ago - in the early 80's. My brother didn't want to wear glasses but your husband convinced him to! He was a wonderful doctor. Our community has lost a great man.

I too experienced a loss this summer as my fiancee passed away unexpectedly on Memorial Day; he was only 51. I can certainly feel the pain you are experiencing. I am a new parishioner at St. Rose. My prayers are with you and your family.

I owe my future career as a Pediatric Ophthalmologist to Dr. Mike Redmond. As a medical student, I planned to become a general pediatrician. A good friend of my fathers who is a General Ophthalmologist told him that I should spend a day with Dr. Redmond in Pensacola, to experience pediatric ophthalmology with "the best" physician to shadow. Dr. Redmond welcomed me to his office to observe for a week, and that was the turning point in my career. His example of loving, compassionate, patient centered care inspired me to dedicate my own career to helping children see. He kept in contact with me throughout my time in medical school, welcomed me back for an elective rotation, wrote me an extremely helpful letter of recommendation when I applied to Ophthalmology residency, and even contacted program directors that he knew to help me match into my residency spot. He was one of the first people I contacted on match day to let him know that I had matched into ophthalmology. I am in my residency now, and I think of him often. There is no question that I will continue my training with a fellowship in pediatric ophthalmology, and I will never forget the incredible physician, teacher, and mentor who encouraged me to follow my heart and be persistent in reaching my goals. He is dearly missed. My deepest sympathy to his family, my thoughts and prayers are with you always. Kelly Hodson M.D.

My son was Dr. Redmond's first patient in Pensacola. Although my son had cerebral palsy & could't "read" the charts at the age of 4, Dr. Redmond was able to prescribe glasses to enable him to see. When my son was attacked by a dog, Dr. Redmond gave up his lunch hour to wait for us to arrive. That evening, in surgery, he put over 40 stitches in my son's eye & face. Today there are no visible scars. I have nothing but praise for Dr. Redmond.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Dr Redmond was my 6yo son's doctor since his birth. He had such a gentle and caring nature. He would always tell Noah, "Noah you're my best patient". Noah would reply, "Dr Redmond, that's because you're my best doctor." He'd then reach his hand in the lollipop drawer. He will be deeply missed. My son said, "Now he's in heaven to help the angels with their eyes." God bless children!

My dear friend and colleague for 30 years was a special person to so many. He was a caring and thoughtful person, and we always had great times together. When we were roommates way back when, we were truly the odd couple, but it gave me the opportunity to get to know him personally, and that was a gift. His dedication to the MCC was one of the reason we did so well as an organization. His tireless efforts took him to the top of field. I will miss my friend, and pray for his family to celebrate his life. His children and wife are very sweet people and I know we will share their loss. Sam LaMonte,M.D.
