Timothy Robbins Obituary

TIMOTHY P. ROBBINS
1938-2008

Timothy P. Robbins of Gulf Breeze went to his eternal reward Saturday morning. It wasn't a grand departure; rather, it was quiet, at last peaceful and supported by his family, friends and the loving, tender and compassionate care of West Florida Covenant Hospice. Tim, as his friends called him, was predeceased in 2002 by the love of his life, Diane, and is survived by his son Christopher Robbins, granddaughter Sierra, and brother, Thomas of Palm Springs, Florida.
Tim was an exceptionally well-read and educated man who could discuss in detail the nuances of a wide range of topics that included economics, politics, aerodynamics, poetry, music, and theology to mention a few. His resonant baritone voice was as pleasing as any professional crooner, and he had a great interest in Big Bands. He enjoyed Big Band music so much that he would chat for hours with Internet friends, share stories and listen to music, and even made an annual trek to Clearwater as part of a Big Band Club fest.
Tim was a religious conservative, social conservative, and an economic conservative. One might even guess that he was a Republican conservative and would be right. He was involved in politics and retired Officer's organizations for a number of years, publishing one organization's monthly newsletter for a period of time.
Among other things, Tim was an unabashed, flag-waving patriot; he loved his country so much that he served it for twenty two years in both the Air Force and Army. To provide balance to his military membership, he married a lovely girl, Diane, who was serving in the US Navy, and finally, one of his closest friends was a retired Marine.
Tim retired as an Army Chief Warrant Officer-3, helicopter pilot for the US Army and later flew for Petroleum Helicopters Incorporated. Tim had over 5000 hours of flight time upon retirement.
Tim or Timmy as many of his friends called him was a native of Massachusetts, born July 7th, 1938. After high school he enlisted in the US Air Force and became an aircraft mechanic. Tim always wanted to fly so at the end of his Air Force enlistment he joined the Army to become a helicopter pilot. During flight training at Corpus Christi, Texas he met his lovely wife, Diane who was in the US Navy at the time.
Tim flew the AH-1G Cobra, OH-58 Kiowa and UH1- Huey during two combat tours in the Vietnam War and Germany. On his second combat tour he was injured by enemy fire that required evacuation to Fort Knox, Kentucky. Chris came along and the family served tours in Germany and Colorado before Tim retired with numerous military awards. Awards included: National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Senior Army Aviator Badge, Vietnam Service Medal with 5 stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm, Purple Heart, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal as well as a sheaf of Letters of Commendation.
Their last duty station was Fort Carson, Colorado, which they both loved. After a job search that reached across the country, they decided to settle in Gulf Breeze, Florida and Tim commuted to his job with Petroleum Helicopter's Incorporated in Louisiana for 15 years before retiring for medical reasons.
After his retirement he was encouraged by Captain Russell Sullivan, USCGR (Ret) to become involved in Jim Paul's Campaign for Congress in 1994. Thereafter he worked in the Regional Office of the State Comptroller in Pensacola and later for District 10 of the Department of Children and Families in Fort Lauderdale. In everything Tim undertook he applied his considerable knowledge, experience, common sense and ironic humor.
He prematurely left DCF in 1999, returning to Pensacola to care for Diane before her death in 2002.
Now, six years later, Tim has joined her with all the host of Heaven. He will undoubtedly join that glorious Choir and lend his voice to the chorus of millions singing God's praises throughout eternity.
To know Tim was to love him; and that is precisely how those who were privileged to know him personally feel.
Now, you too have a brief glimpse of this gentle giant of a man who was the embodiment of all things good, an American Patriot.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, August 22, 2008 at 10:45 in the Oak Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors.
OAK LAWN FUNERAL HOME is in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive family and friends on Friday, August 22, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. until service time.

Tim was my American 'dad,' for many years online. We would talk for hours about many, many things from politics to personal problems & his wife Diane before and after her death. He loved her deeply. We never got to meet personally but did talk on the phone a number of times, and sent Christmas cards to each other. Even after our Triv room closed we kept in touch. I just found out this morning. I had been wondering how he was making out with the recent hurricane...I guess he's watching from up above now. Godspeed Timmie, you will be missed. I still remember your strong voice....till we meet again....

Having been blessed with meeting Tim online almost ten years ago I have had to the chance to go through several rooms changes with him. No matter what happened and how many left you could always count on finding a great room if Tim (Amicable 1) was there. He sought out good people and they just naturally gravitated to him, he was blessed with impeccable values. Tim you were truly one of the great men to walk on this earth, not by means of money or personal gain but in what you added to everyones life who was blessed enough to have you in their life, (online and off). My condolences to your family, may their grief be but a season for remembering the good always helps to relieve the pain of loss. Walk now with God my friend for you truly deserve the that path.

My deepest condolences to Tim's family and friends. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. He was always a classy gentleman to everyone who knew him.....a true patriot. I will miss Tim's awesome music, his trivia questions that made you think and his messages to me about my son. We shared a common bond that many others did not understand....and I recall the first time we discussed it, we both got all teary eyed.

God speed Tim......enjoy your many dances with your wife.....we know you'll continue to look down on all of us from time to time.

I spent many afternoons in Trivia Fun Forum listening to Amic play music, sing along at times, and chat. I will miss him, his beautiful music, and his awesome trivia questions that he always tried to trick us with. He said one time that he looked forward to his first dance in heaven with his wife when he got there and I know he's most likely danced quite a few by now. Dance on Amic my friend!!

To Chris and family,
It was an honour knowing Tim. He was a man who stood up for his beliefs and love of his country. A man of vast knowledge and interests, he touched the lives of all who got to know him, either in person or on-line. Tim was always willing to listen to others and offer some sage advice when asked. He will be missed by many in the online community, who enjoyed his varied questions and great variety of swing music.
Although I mourn his passing, I know that Tim has been released from the bonds of pain and restrictions on his body and is flying free again in the Great Beyond.
Goodbye old friend,

Tim, you will be missed by many as you've touched so many lives such as mine. The hours you've spent being a friend, a kind soul or just a shoulder to cry on were appreciated by us all, even those grumpy times too! The music and questions in the Trivia room brought a smile and a giggle and now we all have fond memories. I will miss you but never, ever forget you kind sir. God speed.

Warm summer sun,

It will be the little things
that you will remember,
the quiet moments,
the smiles, the laughter.
And although it may seem
hard right now,
it will be the memories
of these little things
that help to push
away the pain
and bring the smiles
back again.

Amic -- I know you are resting peacefully now with your lovely wife by your side and your pain abated. For that, I am thankful. I am proud to have known you and been considered a friend. I will miss your voice of reason and your sense of humor in Trivia.

To your family, I can only say that I have never met a more honorable man, even if it was only through the internet. Rest in Peace, Tim.

I knew Tim as the lovable but grumpy Amicable, or Amic for short, in the many Trivia chat rooms that he and I were members of. After our favorite chat room closed, we kept in touch by email. Tim was a very smart man and could make me laugh with his witty sense of humor. Even when he was taking care of his wife when she was ill, he still managed to come on line and have something to add to the room. I never heard him complain about anything during that time, unless it was about some unsavory person in the chatroom. Amic, you will surely be missed by those who were lucky enough to know you, even if it wasn't in person.
God's speed and I hope Heaven is all you thought it would be.

I am proud to say that I knew Tim via our Internet Trivia Chat Room. To all of the players, he was known as "amic" (which is short for amicable). His swing band and big band knowledge served him well... and sometimes he'd shock everyone with an Aerosmith ditty. He had a gentle manner on mic and I'll miss him.
