HERTFORD - Mathew "Henry" Elliott, Jr., age 79, of Hertford, NC, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Henry was born in Perquimans County on August 22, 1945, to the late Katherine Whitehurst Elliott Owens Charles and Mathew Henry Elliott, Sr.
Henry was dedicated to his career at Norfolk Ford Motor Company until his retirement after 43 years. After his retirement, he joined Perquimans County Masonic Lodge 106, the Elizabeth City Shrine Club, and Sudan Shriners Hospital. He enjoyed restoring old gas pumps and air meters, collecting old items, and fixing them up like new ones. He enjoyed the times he got together with his friends/co-workers from the Ford plant for a good meal and fellowship and drinking coffee with the men at the shop. He loved taking Sandra out to breakfast on Saturday mornings. Henry was an active member of Countryside Church of Christ in Edenton, NC.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sandra Williams Elliott; sisters, Marion Mathews and Alice Faye Tillett (Allen); a brother, William Owens (Laura); his children, Joe Elliott (Shirley), Nancy Perry (Jeff), and Connie Sawyer (Donnie); grandchildren, Ginger Perry, Nicholas Sawyer (Cheyenne), JoAnna Elliott, Katie Samson (Robbie), and Jennifer Elliott (Garrett); great-grandchildren, Jodie Castelow, Sophia Samson, Robert Samson, Savannah Samson, Levi Sawyer, Drake White, Acre White, and Bentley Bentz. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Henry Carlton Elliott (Faye), and brother-in-law, Pete Mathews.
The family would like to thank UNC Hospital's Dr. Joshua Zeidner and the entire team; Virginia Oncology's Dr. Julia Schaefer-Cutillo and the entire team; and the Sentara Virginia Beach General team.
Henry fought a hard battle with leukemia cancer since 2020. He never complained and always said, "I'm gonna beat this."
A memorial service with Masonic Rites will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at Twiford Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Daniel Davenport officiating. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service in the funeral home lobby and at other times at the home.
