Carl Peter RESEK

RESEK, Carl Peter 1929 - 2016 On May 27, 2016 Dr. Carl Resek died at home under the compassionate care of Hospice of Petaluma and his beloved wife. He was born in Prague in 1929 and immigrated to America in 1939. After the family arrived in New York both his mother and father practiced medicine in Forest Hills. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1947 and earned his PhD in American Intellectual History at the University of Rochester in 1958. He then taught at Columbia University and Sarah Lawrence College. From 1970 to 1972 he served as a senior member of the planning staff for the new campus of the State University of New York at Purchase. He subsequently assumed the title of Dean of Humanities and served in that position from 1971 to 1990. His most distinguished awards were a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Fulbright Lectureship at the Ionian University in Corfu, Greece. His publications included "Lewis H Morgan, American Scholar;" "The Progressives:" and "War and the Intellectuals, the Collected Essays of Randolph Bourne." He and his wife, the art historian, Dr. Shirley Blum, lived for many years in the Adirondacks where Carl might be seen paddling on Lake Champlain or hiking up an Adirondack trail. Late in life he began rock climbing. Dr. Resek is survived by his two children, his son, Dr. John Resek (Judy Cohn PA); stepson, Jason Blum (Lauren Schuker Blum); three grandchildren, Anna Resek, Ethan Miller, and Roxy Blum; and his wife and life's companion of thirty years, Shirley Blum.
