Abraham Anderson Obituary

Dr. Abraham S. Anderson, 83, softly passed from this world on the morning of Tuesday, 22 January 2019, of natural causes. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ruth Gray and Charles Anderson of Kingston, Jamaica, and his younger brother, Dr. Bernard Anderson of Gondar, Ethiopia. He is a graduate of Calabar High School, an all-boys secondary school in Kingston, Jamaica, Howard University and Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC.As an immigrant to the United States, Dr. Anderson made historic contributions to the medical community of Southeastern coastal Virginia and North Carolina.Founding physician of Gynecology Associates, Ltd, in Norfolk, VA, Dr. Anderson grew, together with his colleagues, a medical practice with multiple offices, including in Portsmouth and Chesapeake, VA, predominantly owned and managed by physicians of color. Gynecology Associates became known for its dedicated service and commitment to communities of color and immigrant communities, those without medical insurance, and military families for almost 50 years. He was a champion of a woman's right to choose. In the true spirit of The Physician's Prayer by Maimonides, patients in need were welcomed with open arms.He served as the Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Norfolk Community Hospital during the last decades of its existence, and later at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, where a delivery room was dedicated in his honor for his "outstanding service to families" in the community. He estimated that he had delivered over 10,000 babies in his lifetime.Dr. Anderson was also a longstanding and well-loved member of the Community Faculty at Eastern Virginia Medical School, and was recognized with the Community Faculty Teaching Award by his medical students in Residency on numerous occasions.A charitable person, Dr. Anderson donated funds, educational tools and medical supplies to organizations in the United States, the Caribbean, Central America, Africa and the Middle East during the course of his life. He made significant donations of land to the University of Miami for scientific research projects, and to a neighboring charitable organization in his native Jamaica. After his retirement, he happily donated professional-grade microscopes to the Homeschool program at the Norfolk Public Library.Known for his kind and humble demeanor, as well as his soft-spoken intellect and humor, he loved water sports, gardening, woodworking, and travel, and, as a lover of fine cuisine, was quite the amateur chef. He cherished spending time in his native Jamaica, as well as Belize. Towards the end of is life, his spiritual journey continued, as he began to learn and study the Bible and to pray with greater intensity, learning more about the Jewish roots of the Judeo-Christian tradition in which he had been raised. Dr. Anderson is survived by his former spouse and the mother of his children, Dr. Gloria D. Anderson, of Norfolk, VA; his three children, Ruth Rachel Anderson-Avraham and Joni Anderson of Norfolk, VA, and Anthony Anderson of Virginia Beach, VA; one grandchild, London Robinson of Norfolk, VA, daughter of Joni; his younger brother and sister, Winston Anderson of Silver Spring, MD and Jean Anderson of Annapolis, MD; beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law, and extended family, both in the United States and abroad.Family and friends are presently gathering at 1913 Fox's Lair Trail, Norfolk, Virginia 23518.On Sunday, 27 January 2019, from 3-5pm, the family will receive friends for visitation and signature of the register at Metropolitan - Granby, 7246 Granby Street, Norfolk, VA 23505.The Funeral Service will be held on Monday, 28 January 2019, 11am, also at Metropolitan - Granby, and the interment at Carver Memorial Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia will immediately follow. Memorials may be directed to Metropolitan - Granby. Those who desire may make a charitable contribution in memory of Dr. Anderson to UNICEF (www.unicef.org) or to Howard University (https://giving.howard.edu).

I am deeply saddened to learn of Dr. Abraham Anderson's passing. I had the extreme honor of working with him in his office and he also delivered all 3 of my Grandchildren. Dr. Anderson was a kind, compassionate, and generous soul. The best Doctor I have ever worked with/for. He never turned a patient away...regardless of their ability to pay. I remember many nights we would load up the company van and drop patients off at their homes because the buses had stopped running! That's right, I said "nights". Patient appointments ran from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and then the "walk-ins" started. I have so much respect and love for this man. He was a great teacher, mentor, and friend. He was also a perfectionist, if you left a stone unturned you would hear about it...because he delivered excellent, optimal patient care, and if you were fortunate enough to work with him or be his patient, you knew this. He was a champion of women's health and advocate for choice. There will NEVER be another Abraham S. Anderson, MD. Fly high, Dr. Abe, and thank you. You will forever be in my heart.

To the Family of Dr. Abraham Anderson,
I am very saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Anderson. Dr. Anderson tended to me during my first pregnancy and delivered my first born on Jan 6 1977. Even though my son's birth was 40+ years ago, I will always remember the excellent care and attention Dr. Anderson provided to me throughout my pregnancy and delivery. At that time as a first-time soon-to-be-mother who did not know what to expect, Dr. Anderson's professionalism, calm demeanor, and assurance that everything would be fine is something I will always remember; he was awesome. He took such great care of so many women in the Tidewater area. His legacy will live on forever. Extending my sincere condolences to the family.

To The Sky

When we miss someone
We see them in every little thing that we do

Switching on and off
the light

Pouring a cup
of coffee

Sitting on the edge of the bed
before lying down to sleep at night

When we miss someone
We see them in every little thing that we do

Their souls linger with us
Though they have departed from us

Making us well with tears

Or quietly break into a knowing smile
joyfully embracing their presence
their memory in our minds
and hearts

Together, We laugh
We cry
We fly

G-d carries us on His wings
So that the people we love
Never leave us

My regards and condolences to Dr. Andersons family. Andy (as Dr. Anderson was known to his classmates) and I were in the same class at Howard Universitys College of Medicine. After graduation, we were assigned to the same training team of 3 interns at Freedmens Hospital. In Medical School and during that year of training, he was so dedicated that he gave up everything that was not directly connected with our training. Often that included eating and sleeping. However, then and later, he always had a quiet, patient, caring manner with a superior intellect that permitted him to have outstanding dedication to the practice of Medicine!!
As time passes, I do hope that both his family and his patients will be comforted by memories of him, his honesty, his diligence with his wonderful quiet but quick sense of humor, his accomplishments and the love he gave to you.
That love will never die!!

I worked for Dr. Anderson for 10 yrs @ the Greenbrier Office on Eden Way. I worked the front desk & "Doc" used to joke how it was like being on the "Front Lines" of a war!! Never a dull moment!! The majority of OB/Gyn's in this area all interned under Dr. A. He was one of the smartest, humble & loyal to a fault person I have ever known!! We could not complain about the hrs that we worked as Dr A was right there with us & always stayed & we would all leave together. His dedication as a Dr. is a dying breed & I really do not not any Physician that holds a candle to Doc!! If Doc told me to schedule a surgery, a test @ the hospital or any other numerous request for a patient, he did not want to hear "They have no insurance & cannot pay". Somehow, someway together we made it happen. Doc was a humble man. When he spoke people listened as he was not a blow-hart.He took care of me & every patient as if they were his family. I loved Dr Anderson & am very proud to say that I was a part of his legacy!! I will miss you Doc!! I will never forget you & our years together!!

May the Lord Bless your Family & give them peace!!

I had my first visit to Doc's office on Church Street when I was 18, I am now 67 and he was my sole gynecologist until his full retirement. I worked in his office on Brambleton Ave and he delivered my daughter. Doc was the most well-informed, gentle-spirited physician I know. He was well respected by patients and colleagues. I am blessed to have been under the care of such an excellent doctor and compassionate man. May God bless your soul.

My deepest condolences to his entire family. He was truly the greatest doctor I ever had and took very good care of me until I lost my insurance a few years back. No doctor like him and he save my life when I was near death. He made sure I was well taken care of. I don't know about nobody else but I know what he was to me. My heart is broken. When I got my insurance back 3 years and went looking for him only to find his office closed down and he had retired. I still remember my first visit when his practice was on Portsmouth Blvd (Portsmouth, Va) October 7, 1986. What I will miss the most is his laugh and humor! I used to crack him up at every visit. That was my buddy there
