Alfred Vinson Obituary

A. Mitchell Vinson VIRGINIA BEACH - Dr. Alfred Mitchell Vinson, 72, passed away in his home in Virginia Beach on June 13, 2010 after a valiant fight against cancer. Mitch is survived by his adored daughter, Jennifer Vinson Huelsberg, her husband, Trey Huelsberg and their daughter and his namesake, Alexis Mitchell Huelsberg, who delighted in calling him "Boppy." Mitch also leaves behind his cherished partner of close to 15 years, Elizabeth "Libba" Hart Moseley, whose devotion and care during his final months comforted beyond words - both Mitch and the many others who loved him. Other survivors include Mitch's brothers, Frank Vinson (Ann) and Ken Vinson (Sharon) and his sister, Ann Frances Vinson "Sis"; treasured nieces and nephews, Dorothy Ann Hull (Mike), Joanna Blythe (Ryan), Ben Vinson (Ansley), Laurie Vaughan (Stephen), Daniel Vinson and Joseph Vinson; many other extended family members in Georgia and Texas; and Phyllis Vinson, to whom Mitch was married for 25 years. Mitch was born June 9, 1938 in Macon and grew up in Fort Valley, Ga., the second son of Dr. Frank and Ann Frances Mitchell Vinson. Mitch graduated from Emory University in Atlanta and the Medical College of Georgia. Following medical school, he served as a chief medical officer in the U.S. Air Force. After his service in the Air Force, Mitch completed his radiology fellowship in Denver. He then moved to Virginia Beach where he spent the rest of his professional career as one of the initial members of Medical Center Radiologists, a preeminent radiology group in Hampton Roads, where he was a pioneer in the field of interventional radiology. Mitch loved life. He was an avid fisherman, chef, boater, sportsman, skier and woodcrafter, an exceptional golfer, and a "lover, fighter and rider of wild horses." Mitch was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 17, at Eastern Shore Chapel in Virginia Beach with the Rev. Julia Ashby presiding. Following the service, Mitch's family will receive friends at the Baycliff, Virginia Beach, home of Jennifer and Trey Huelsberg. A burial service will follow later this summer in Fort Valley's Oaklawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Virginia Beach Office of the American Cancer Society, 4416 Expressway Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23452.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Libba and the family of Dr. Vinson. I worked with Dr. Vinson for many years and have many great memories of him, that will stay with me forever. He taught me how to shoot my pistol(late 80's) and I still have this special screw driver he made for me. He will be missed.....Love, Sherry Greer

I was lucky to work with Dr. Vinson for 8 years at Norfolk General back in the 80's. He was always laughing about something....one of the few. It sure did make life easier then, that was 21 years ago. Between him, Dr. Kessler , the jokes kept on flying.
What a great man, I am so glad that I was able to work with him, I learned so much.

You and your family are in my heart and prayers, always.....

My husband Dave and I lived across the street from Mitch and family for 20 years. We shared boats, kitchens, dogs, hot tubs, laughter and lots of neighborly love - after we Northerners learned Georgia speak! Best of all, we shared Jenny!! Mitch was a shining light in our lives. We will always treasure our memories of Mitch.

We didn't know Mitch as well as we would have liked but we felt Jenny was our third child. Our thoughts and prayers are with the whole family. Lots of love,Barbara and Jan 7/16/10

I had the privilege of working with Dr. Vinson for many years when he worked at Sentara Leigh (Memorial). His Georgia drawl, sense of humor and love of life always made our days happier. My condolences to Libba and all his family.
