He retired with his wife in 2001. In retirement, he and his wife embraced gardening and built a manicured lawn and garden admired by many. He loved spending time with his son and granddaughters, cheering on his Olympiacos Football Club and helping his brother's family at Big Daddy's Pizza. He was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Norfolk, VA.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son Grigorios (Greg) Alexopoulos and wife Joni of Rye, NY; two brothers, Athanasios Alexopoulos and wife Voula of Greece and Evangelos (Van) Alexopoulos and wife Aspasia of Elizabeth City, NC; a sister, Nerantzia (Rita) Alexopoulos Vlahos of Kitty Hawk, NC; three granddaughters, Evangelia, Maria and Aristea; and many nephews and nieces.
