Charles Cayce Obituary

Charles Thomas Cayce

Virginia Beach - Charles Thomas Cayce, Ph.D., President of the Edgar Cayce Foundation and a Board member of Edgar Cayce's A.R.E. died unexpectedly on April 29, 2016.

The eldest son of Hugh Lynn and Sally Cayce, he was predeceased by his brother, Greg. Charles Thomas grew up in Virginia Beach and attended Hampden-Sydney College and later did graduate work at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Mississippi from which he received his Ph.D. in child psychology in 1968. He taught college for several years and worked for the U.S. State Department abroad before returning to Virginia Beach and joining the A.R.E. staff.

He became president of the Association for Research and Enlightenment, the organization founded by his grandfather, Edgar Cayce, in 1977 and served as president for 29 years until he retired in 2006. A respected scholar of the Cayce readings, he lived their principles-service, kindness, gentleness, forgiveness- every day. Those who worked with him, listened to him teach or crossed his path for any length of time experienced his unrelenting thoughtfulness, deep optimism and creative problem-solving. Charles Thomas was such a warm presence a truly kind and curious soul--and anyone who spent time with him will understand how much he'll be missed by all who loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie, his two children, Corinne (and husband Jesse Luckett) and Catherine (and husband Thomas Pierce) and four grandchildren, Lily, River, Eleanor and Juniper.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Charles Thomas Cayce Endowment Fund, c/o A.R.E., 215 67th Street, Virginia Beach, VA 23451, which was set up in in his memory to help support the A.R.E. work to which he dedicated his life.

A memorial service will be held at A.R.E., during the organization's 85th anniversary on Saturday, June 25th at 10:00 am.

On behalf of the Media Study Group, Media, Pennsylvania, I extend my deep condolences to the Cayce family and ARE community at Virginia Beach. In previous years, members of the Study Group and I met Charles Thomas in the Philadelphia area when he was on field work and at Virginia Beach where he led the noon meditation and workshops. I remember him as a regular guy who like his father, Hugh Lynn, reached out to all with whom he came in contact. His sudden passing is akin to losing a member of the family. Coincidentally, I'll be attending a memorial service for a family member on Saturday, June 25, 2016, at 10:00 AM, and I will be remembering him.

I REMEMBER "CT" AS ALWAYS HUMBLE, FUNNY, KIND, AND PATIENT. I MUCH ADMIRED HIS WILLINGNESS AND ABILITY TO LEAD THE A.R.E. SAFELY INTO THE FUTURE WHILE FOLLOWING IN THE CHALLENGING FOOTSTEPS OF HIS FATHER AND GRANDFATHER, WHEN NO ONE ELSE COULD MANAGE IT FOR SOME YEARS. I'LL NEVER FORGET HIS TELLING A HILARIOUS STORY ON HIMSELF ABOUT BEING LOCKED OUT OF HIS HOTEL ROOM IN HIS UNDERWEAR! I GOT THE IMPRESSION OF A SHY MAN WHO FACED UP TO GREAT CHALLENGES WITH COURAGE IN ORDER TO BE OF SERVICE. I OFTEN FIND A REMARK OR COMMENT FROM ONE OF HIS LECTURES COMING TO MIND AS A PIECE OF WISDOM THAT IS USEFUL IN MY LIFE. I AM VERY GRATEFUL TO BOTH HIM AND HIS FAMILY FOR ALL THEIR SACRIFICES MADE TO HELP BOTH INDIVIDUALS AND THE WORLD AT LARGE. THANK YOU ALL, AND MANY BLESSINGS TO YOU.

I FIRST MET CHARLES THOMAS ABOUT 45 YEARS AGO, AT THE RURAL RETREAT CAMP. EVERY TIME I SAW HIM HE WAS ALWAYS SERVING OTHERS, WITH GENTLE THOUGHTFULNESS AND KINDNESS. HE LIVED THE FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT MORE THAN ANYONE I'VE EVER MET. AN AMAZING EXAMPLE AND ROLE MODEL HE WAS.
I SEND SINCERE APPRECIATION OF FEELINGS OF LOSS TO HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES. WE CAN CELEBRATE A LIFE FULLY LIVED.

I had first met him on the stairway to the old hospital building while on my honeymoon 1977,he was in a hurry to the library building but I asked him to take a photo with us..Even though he was late ,he did... Never did I realize that years later I would be dealing with him as A.R.E congress chairman. Though out the years we did not always agree but I always respected him and liked him and told him so. I will miss him. I felt that our paths have crossed other lifetimes and I feel we will meet each other again.Have a good rest CT. Vic

I was fortunate to have worked weekly with Charles Thomas during the 1990's. He was kind and gentle. He manifested all the Fruits of the Spirit, and have not since met someone that could wear his shoes. I would feel confident to ask any question of him and trust his kind, sensitive consideration and response. He was fortunate to have 10 years of retirement to enjoy his family. Indeed, it was sad to hear of his passing.
