Charles Pumphrey Obituary

Charles P. Pumphrey

Knotts Island - Charles "Pat" Pumphrey, 65, passed away on November 5, 2016. He was born in Washington DC to Charles Stanley & Mary Agnes Pumphrey.

Pat attended Mt. Calvary Elementary, Suitland High School and went to the University of Maryland. He proudly served the US Army in Korea. Pat retired from the Va. Beach Police Department as a decorated officer.

Pat loved music and playing his guitar. He also enjoyed sailing, riding his motorcycle, surfing, camping, traveling the world, and recently traveling with Leigh Ann in his RV and spending time in the outdoors.

Left to cherish his memory is his son, Charlie Pumphrey; sisters, Ann Tennison and Mary "Peggy" Chaney; nieces, Casey McClure (Jeff) and Christina Clark (Jon); nephews, Jason Tennison and Lon Chaney (Alyson); close friend, Leigh Ann Dowdy Conner; along with extended family and friends.

Pat was very social and loved everyone. He was charming and could always make people feel good about themselves. He was very entertaining and loved to debate anyone on politics or religion and especially loved to play scrabble. He will be terribly missed by everyone that knew him; for Pat knew no strangers and considered everyone a friend. The greatest joy in Pat's life was his son Charlie, whom he called his hero.

A memorial service will be held at 11am on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2016 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. The family will receive friends one prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Knotts Island Volunteer Fire Department. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com

Charlie seems to miss you more as time passes. I suppose he has more appreciation for many of the times you spent together. I believe he misses your old friends too, hasn’t seen any of them. Things sure haven’t gotten easier but I am trying, one foot in front of the other! rObYn

I was deeply saddened to hear that Pat had passed away. He was so witty and charming. He never failed to make me laugh. Much love to you, Peggy, Ann, and Charlie. Pat said that my sisters and Charlie are the best part of me. I am sending love and hugs to you all.

From Fairfax Village in Washington, DC to Knotts Island in North Carolina, and elsewhere through his worldly travels, Patrick made friends! They were his best as he cared for us, and for all who met Patrick, he was our best! We all loved Patrick!

The night sky will be a little less bright. One of its stars went dark much sooner than it should have. But he will remain bright in my heart and many other of his friends and familys hearts. Pat, you made this world brighter. RIP, see ya.
