Charlotte Bigony Obituary

Charlotte S. Bigony

Suffolk - Charlotte Steel Bigony, beloved mother, sister and wife, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Monday, January 30, 2017.

She is survived by her husband, Mike Bigony of Suffolk, VA; son, Kevin Chatham of Jackson, WY; daughter, Mary Ann Groton (Hunter) of Atlanta, GA; sister, Shirley Howell of Suffolk, VA; grandchildren, Hunter Groton, Jr. and Charlotte Groton of Atlanta, GA; nephews, Rick and Charles Savage and Rob and Fletcher Bonwell; and nieces, Kelly and Maddie Savage and Sandi, Brooke and Blair Lindsey.

Charlotte was born at Norfolk General Hospital on August 28, 1944 to Dr. Charles W. Steel and Annie F. Steel of Suffolk, VA. She was a 1962 graduate of Suffolk High School and attended Averett and William and Mary colleges. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Suffolk for more than 50 years. She taught Sunday School for 25 of those years. She loved working with children and particularly enjoyed her participation with Book Buddies. She was very active in an Eastern Shore outreach ministry for migrant farm workers, and taught Vacation Bible School.

Spending time with her grandchildren was one of Charlotte's favorite activities. She loved traveling, having visited Israel three times. She made many trips to New York City. She enjoyed swimming in the ocean, hiking in the Rocky Mountain west, reading and studying the Bible, and taking walks around her neighborhood.

A memorial service for Charlotte will be held at First Baptist Church of Suffolk, 237 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA at 12:00pm on Friday, February 3, 2017 with the Rev. Dr. Thurman Hayes, Jr. and Rev. Lindsay Poteat. A private burial will take place prior to the memorial service. The family will receive friends following the service in the Family Life Center.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to First Baptist Church in memory of Charlotte Bigony are appreciated. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, VA, is assisting the family. Condolences may be registered at RWBakerFH.com.

I never met Char in person, but have known her for close to 20 years through the internet and an e-mail loop of friends. She was such a special lady and I consider it a privilege to have been able to consider her my friend.

Charlotte loved her family and I send my deepest sympathies to Mike, her children, grandchildren, sister and to all who knew and loved this most special lady!!

Charlotte was a long time online friend I admired and loved so much. She was a true inspiration to me. I miss her and know our email loop is not the same without her. So very sad but glad she is no longer suffering. My condolences to all the family. I will cherish all the memories of our time knowing each other. Margy Allen

Wonderful lady who loved the Lord. Enjoyed mission trips to Easter Shore Vacation Bible school and Sunday School with her. Anytime you were with Charlotte you knew she knew the Lord and proclaimed the name of Jesus as her savior and wanted you to know him too.
You will be missed sweet lady!
