Christopher Hogan Obituary

SUFFOLK- Dr. Christopher Hogan, 52, passed away unexpectedly August 14, 2021. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chris grew up in Byram Township, New Jersey, where he graduated from Lenape Valley Regional High School. Chris then attended the University of Virginia, where he became a triple Hoo, completing his undergraduate studies in 1990, medical school in 1994, and six-year residency in orthopedic surgery in 2000. In 2003 Chris then went on to Duke University where he completed his Hand Fellowship. In 2000, Chris began his career as a naval officer and resident surgeon at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center. He was on staff as a hand surgeon for 21 years, taught as clinical faculty of EVMS, directed the microsurgery course, and was an active teacher of hundreds of residents. Outside of work, he took great joy in being a coach for several years for Churchland Soccer and Portsmouth Golden Ball Soccer, an assistant coach of Nansemond Suffolk Academy Varsity Soccer and a basketball coach at the Portsmouth YMCA. He was also a talented musician, beginning his trumpet career at four years old, playing for his high school marching band, playing in UVA's infamous pep band, as well as leading several jazz groups, church groups, and his favorite, playing with his children for Christmas service.

It is difficult to put into words just how greatly Chris will be missed. Chris will be remembered by family and friends for his devotion to teaching anyone at any time, his love for everyone, big and small, and for truly being Superman. The family asks that friends email stories and memories of Chris to [email protected].

Chris lives on through his bride of 27 years, Angela Duff Hogan; daughter and light of his life, Kelly Elizabeth Hogan; two sons cut from the same mold, John Wesley Hogan and Brett Rexford Hogan; parents, John F. and Mary A. Hogan; two sisters, Mary Cay Paternostro and husband, Tim, and Karen Hogan; brother, John I. Hogan and wife, Arlene; nephews and nieces, Tyler Hogan, Samantha Hogan, Katie Paternostro, Abby Paternostro and Jack Paternostro; mother-in-law, Roberta McWhorter; father-in-law, Dr. W. Rex Duff; two sisters-in-law, Deborah Greenberg and husband, Richard, and Lara Duff; four brothers-in-law, W. Rexford Duff and wife, Irena, Don Ryan Duff and wife, Karen, W. Andre Duff and wife, Susan, and Lance Duff; and numerous other nieces and nephews, including Lexie Cunningham.

There will be a visitation in the chapel for military personnel at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth on Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m., a visitation for everyone at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and the funeral service at First Lutheran Church, 1301 Colley Avenue, Norfolk, on Saturday at 10 a.m. The family has requested anyone attending either visitation or service to please wear a face mask. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a scholarship fund set up in Chris's name for EVMS students pursuing a career in orthopedics, so that his love of medicine and teaching can live on: Dr. Chris Hogan Orthopedic Scholarship Fund, EVMS Foundation, P.O. Box 5, Norfolk, Va. 23501-0005. Friends may inquire if they would like to make gifts by phone or via the website: 757-965-8500, www.evms.edu/giving.

I am sorry for your loss. About 6 years ago I broke both of my wrists. Dr. Hogan was my primary surgeon. He was very kind and I appreciated him very much. Thank you Dr. Hogan for your considerate care. RIP.

Dr. Angela Hogan, I am so terribly sorry to hear about your husbands passing. I personally, did not know your husband but shed tears for you this morning when I heard. You have been by far the sweetest and most thorough doctor to our daughter. My family and I are praying for an abundant amount of strength and comfort for you, your children and family.

I was a resident at Portsmouth and knew I recognized his name - My only encounter with him - My battery ran out at the hospital garage and I could not start my car. He stopped came out of his car (a van I believe) and helped me jump start my car and made sure all was well. Never forget my first thought - "what a big nice guy". Praying for his family through this tough times.

My deepest condolences to the Hogan family. I babysat the kids throughout high school, and it was always so apparent how loving and kind of a father and husband Dr. Hogan was. Despite his busy career he always made time to play outside, coach sports, or just listen to the kids chatter about their day. My heart goes out to Angela, Kelly, John, and Brett.

I was an OR nurse at NMCP, and had the privilege of working with CAPT Hogan. He was always so nice to the staff members, always with a smile on his face. He was a joy to be around. I will miss his smile in the hallways.

May he feast at the Master's eternal table.

My sincerest condolences to Chris' family and friends. I went to high school with Chris at Lenape Valley in Stanhope, NJ - we graduated together in 1986. I remember him as such a mature, good man, even as a teenager. He always seemed to have a strong moral compass and an incredible work ethic. I'm sorry to have missed his time in Durham, NC at Duke in 2003.
Peace and Love to you all as you weather this tremendous loss.
