David Antanitus Obituary

David Joseph Antanitus, of Chesapeake, Virginia, died unexpectedly on November 24, 2021 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was born in La Salle, Illinois on September 15, 1952 to the late Stanley and Phyllis Antanitus. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1974 and served for 30 years in submarines and program acquisitions. Dave retired from the Navy in 2004 as a Rear Admiral. He then worked as a senior capture manager for SAIC and Leidos until 2017.

Dave was a lifelong hunter and fisherman. His constant companion in retirement was his French Brittany spaniel, Brie.

Dave will be lovingly remembered by his wife Betsy, his daughters Emily, Alison and Rachel, his granddaughters Maya and Zoe, and his brother, Dale.

A celebration of life will be held at Eastern Shore Chapel in Virginia Beach on Friday, December 10, 2021 at 11:00am, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dave's memory may be made to your favorite charity.

Betsy and Family,

Please accept our condolences on the loss of Dave! His influence on so many of us will not soon be forgotten! I knew him during his midshipman years, his submarine and acquisition career, and during his post service corporate jobs. In each phase he was the ultimate professional, a leader unsurpassed, and the most positive person in the room!

His influence on all he touched will never be forgotten.

May your loving memories of Dave give you and the Family strength during this most difficult of times!

God Bless You!

I worked for Dave as a contractor. He was a true professional and a gentleman and treated me fairly. It was a shock to learn of his passing. He was always so vital and full of life. Rest In Peace Admiral.

Henry Netzer,

December 10, 2021

This is Henry Netzer in Hayden, Idaho. I am shocked, sobered and saddened at the news. Dave and I were company mates, shared the same major, were both Submariners. He was in our wedding in Wisconsin 4 days after graduation (see pic). We would talk periodically and see each other at unplanned times. We ended up on the same plane from San Fran to DC to take the engineer´s exam. And we saw each other at the airport a few times.

Dave was always upbeat and positive. I will miss that. We all know he had a passion for hunting. I also sensed a deep attraction, or even love, for the Navy, the Submarine Force and his family. I will miss that.

I will also miss sharing some hunting braggin´ rights-though I´m certain few can top Dave´s.

I pray for peace and comfort for the ladies and girls in his life.

Condolences to the family. So sorry to hear of my Classmate Dave's untimely passing.

Dave and I were both submarine commanders, he in USS Hampton and I in USS Silversides. We worked together in the Pentagon when Dave was in OP 74 and I was in OP 70. We were also colleagues in the Virginia Beach Office of SAIC/Leidos for several years. Dave was a 'shipmate' and a good friend and he will be missed.

My sincerest condolences to the family on this sad and sudden occurrence. Dave and I served together building our new 688 class ships at Newport News. He knew how to laugh and how to keep it real when the occasional dark days were upon us!

Dear Betsy, family and friends of David´s,

On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at David´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" leaves on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Ulysses S Grant SSBN-631.

To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
Betsy... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).

Jim Sandman, FTC(SS) Ret.
National Chaplain USSVI.

May I offer my deepest sympathy to you all for our loss of Dave. He was a great Naval leader and former boss in PMS 395 and will be missed.

Please accept my sincere condolences on Dave's passing. He was he a highly-regarded classmate, with a sharp intellect and strengths of character to match. Although our paths did not cross after graduation (he a nuke and me a Marine), I still felt connected through his in-laws.
I pray that the knowledge that your grief is shared lightens the load in some small way.
Very respectfully,
Jim Diehl

Dear Betsy and family, please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. While I worked FOR Dave, he always made me feel I worked WITH him. He was truly one of a kind. We initially bonded because we both grew up in the Chicago area. We had so many interesting and unforgettable experiences together both here in DC and overseas - as did many I am sure. I am so saddened to hear this news and I know he touched so many others.
